Imagine you are out sailing, and your boat is totaled by a jumping whale. How do you explain it to the insurance company? Unless, someone got pictures...

BTW, I am a photoshop professional, and I immediately opened the first shot to look for signs of fakery. If it is a fake, it's a damn good fake. Besides, it's a believable story. Deer and cars collide all the time, so why not a whale and a boat.

Scary stuff but not that unusual. There is a utube video of a whale landing on a kayaker and he popped up safe..

Actually, Snopes.com says the whale landing on the kayaker who popped up safe is a fake...

Gotta love Snopes...used it a few times to settle arguments

Been thinking that we should get a photo shop thread going. Could have a lot of fun with camping photo's and such

OH heck, fun to watch anyway. I don't know how anyone can tell or how Snopes can even keep up with all the stuff out there. :?

It amazes me that so many people accept Snopes word as the final answer. Snopes is not always right. But somehow has the reputation as being the one source of truth.

Can you imagine what a powerful propaganda tool that could make them? Personally I view Snopes with about the same degree of confidence as any other source of information on the internet, if not a bit more dangerous than most. They, can be, and in some cases are wrong, just like anyone else.

They don't just say true of false, they give a history of where the stories came from, and how they came to verify or debunk the story. Most importantly, they cite sources in detail.

Snopes.com has come under attack from political extremists who don't like the outcome of their research. The facts don't support the charges, but that's politics for you.

Now, the video of the whale and the kayaker was actually made from footage of a whale by itself, with the kayaker digitally placed into the video by an ad agency. It was done for a TV commercial in Korea for Powerade Energy Drink.

Why would you doubt that?

More on the whale boat crash.

The photo was taken by a whale watcher, who was following the whale with a camera, taking pictures as it surfaced several times near them. That's how the camera came to be pointed at the right place at the right time.

The whale didn't land on the boat, but the whale did collide with the mast, breaking it off.

The woman sailor on the boat was interviewed by CNN. They were running under sail -- no engine. The juvenile whale probably didn't hear them to know the boat was there.

I don't doubt "that". I just doubt that Snopes' facts are any more reliable than the anybody else. Who's to say that their "proof" is always reliable? I simply do not accept the fact that "Snopes says" automatically ends all doubt.

Just in case there was any doubt, there is now a video that shows the whale hitting the boat.

Snopes does, at best, nothing more than WE can do - check for other corroborating evidence - news stories or articles, names and other verifiable data, etc.
Neither Snopes nor Wiki are infallible, and neither should be admissible in a court of law. But, they can be a source of useful info. As with ANYTHING on the internet - if it sounds good, trust but verify!
