Bending powered coated side edge moulding

Postby Blackjack » Thu Jul 15, 2010 10:21 am

I have found a supplier that has white powered coated side edge moulding (with the 1" insert), which would look just terrific on my TD. I am a bit concerned that if I purchase it and then try to aneel (sp)it, it could damage the powered coated surface. Of course, if I just purchase the standard aluminum moulding, I wouldn't have any problems.

Has anyone else worked with this before? If so, how did you bend it without distroying the painted coating? Have you had any luck?

Thanks,

BJ

Most of the RV edge insert molding you find these days is pretty bendable without annealing. I bent mine with no problems.

How much of a bend are you planning on?

I was wondering why the water balloon was getting bigger... and then it hit me.

You should be fine. If you keep the heat under 350*f it shouldn't discolor the powder coat. I can tell you for a fact that if the coating was done properly you will have no problems bending it. I powder coat as a hobby and I've coated plenty of aluminum foil and you can bend it almost in half before it cracks.

I had trouble getting deadsoft angle molding in time to finish my build to go camping. I picked up some powder coated angle (1x1/2) that didn't want to bend much on its own. Over several heating cycles, I got it to fit into my wheel wells...about a 16" radius. The paint showed no ill effects. To heat it, I used mapp gas, being sure not to let the torch linger on any one spot for "too long."

I had trouble trimming my hatch...need to revisit this soon. I cut the trim down to 1/2x1/2 on the table saw (being sure to use a jig to guide the Al in to the blade) then went after a very tight radius. I cam close to getting the raidus on one of the 1/2's, but the other warped. I think I'm going to put a flat piece over the joint line, then flush cut it to the profile...I'll be counting on some liberal applications of epoxy here.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and comments. I will go ahead and first try to bend the rv moulding and see how that works. If that doesn't come out the way I would like, I will pick up some mapp gas and try to heat it up.
