Keeping Animals out of the garden

This may be a "Who Don't Know That" Item....BUT!

A lot of us know that hot pepper keeps animals out of the garden.

But the problem is getting good coverage on the plants.

I do this and I know it works.

A lot of people have a bottle of Super Hot Sauce laying around.

Either you got it as a gift, bought it just to try or what ever, Only to discover it is entirely to hot for Humans.

Look waaayyy back in the Ref....its there.

If not, get some.

This is your Ammo.

Get a spray bottle, fill it with water and put 6-7 drops in it and treat the plants.

I tried using normal hot sauce and even cutting it with a lot of water its to thick to go through the spray bottle.

The super hot, when cut with water only has a very small, but enough hot sauce in it to flow evenly through the nozzle allowing you to apply the mix evenly and on everything.

Happy Trails

Thanks Len, I will pass this info along to the wife..

The deer have eaten several of her prized plants this season, and they will only get worse as the food supply dwindles.

Beth has been spraying with stuff called 'Liquid Fence', boy does this crap smell bad.. and it cost like $25 a gallon too.

I will let you know how your mix works for us.

I didn't see this yet and it is important:

WARNING: DO NOT TOUCH A SPRAYED PLANT OR THE ACTUAL LIQUID AND THEN TOUCH YOUR EYES.

I do something similar with a cooked and strained mixture of water, jalapeños, garlic, and soap. Be aware that these mixtures loose their effectiveness after a rain.

To keep deer away from certain plants, even in bad weather, use garlic cloves. Get some fabric netting. Green blends best. The netting holes should be small enough to keep the garlic from falling out. Cut the netting into squares big enough to wrap around one peeled garlic clove with a little left on the ends to tie it in. Roll the netting around the clove and secure the ends with twist tie strands. Leave the twist tie strands long enough so that you can tie them on the branches. Tie these on the ends of all major branches. This method will take some time to do but it will last through the entire winter season and will save you time and money in the long run. (I put everything in bowls and watch TV while I'm peeling, rolling and twisting my "weapons".) I also scatter some peeled garlic cloves on the ground under particularly vulnerable bushes. Roses and members of the rose family, like Hawthorn, are "deer candy" but, deer hate the smell of garlic and turn to another plant or to a neighbor's unprotected plants.

The deer around these parts don't seem to mind a little extra spice on their food. They do have a bit of a problem with the 7 foot high welded wire fence though......

I don't really have a problem with Deer. Its funny, my next door neighbor does???

We have a small drainage creek between us (that is dry most of the time) and they just won't cross it.

A fence works very well, but as my other neighbor found out squirrels/rabbits can chew right through the plastic mesh.

Touching your eyes before washing your hands is bad...but touching other things before washing is VERY BAD.

Happy Trails
