Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Postby Prem » Sun Jul 25, 2010 9:47 pm

GPW,

I'll bet if you ordered one of those RVs stripped...nothing on the interior...it would still weigh more than a steel, v-nose, cargo trailer.

The RV industry still doesn't get the weight thing. Big weight = Bigger tow vehicle = More $ for fuel.

I am really glad mine is an aluminum cargo trailer that only weighs 1,250 loaded.

You're right. Light is best in many ways!

Prem

Prem , maybe I'm just old and dumb , but I can't seem to grasp their logic .... As far as RVs go they are heavy, poorly designed and constructed ,unable to carry anything much more than the campers themselves , and filled with many waaaay too expensive things that hardly last beyond the warranty .. Having bought one (BIG Mistake) I think now it's all a game (for the unknowing suckers) to relieve the camper (or camper wannabe) of their life savings on a continuous basis... :o
Once bitten , we now know what NOT to buy , and that's Anything RV...
Which is why we're so darn excited to find something that actually works , for a quarter of the price, is really easy to tow , and lasts more than a day beyond the warranty ... Cargo trailers really make GOOD SENSE , which I guess explains their increasing popularity ... I'm totally Hooked on this idea...

The other obvious benefit is when not camping you can actually HAUL STUFF too!!! :o 8) :applause:

GPW,

An excellent point and one we are taking advantage of. We have way too many vehicles, which wasn't a problem over the past 11 years when we lived on and managed the 60 acre local public shooting range but we gave that up recently (it was a 2nd job for both of us) and moved back into our suburban home in town... and we have autos/vehicles coming out the wazoo. A 1967 Sunbeam Alpine, two Porsche 914's, a 96 Jaguar XJ6 we restored, a 94 T-bird, a 95 bare bones Ford Ranger pickup, the Jeep Cherokee, my Harley, the CT, and the Jayco 165. When we bought the CT it was with the thought that it would be a conversion camper allowing us to haul the Harley but also a replacement for the Ford Ranger, which was only good for running errands and hauling light loads such as to the dumps, to pick up furniture, lumber, etc. So we'll be selling the Ranger and replacing its ability to haul stuff with the CT, which is the other reason I need to keep it fairly open. With its 10' interior length it can haul a lot more than the Ranger. Need to buy some 8' lumber, not a problem with the CT but could be a problem with the Ranger. Also, when the CT is not in use and parked in the driveway I can store my Harley in there, my table saw, and my chop saw on its stand. That frees up space in the double car garage.

All in all I don't know why we didn't buy a cargo trailer a long time ago. It is a very handy and versatile unit to have.

Don,

HAUL stuff in a cargo trailer?
Are you nuts? You could panel it, install a bed and a TV and live in it! :rofl2:

Sell the house and all the extra vehicles and hit the road. You can drive from Alaska to Panama towing it! :o Put it on the ferry in Panama and get off in Columbia, then drive to the tip of Argentina...and back.

Life is short. :cheerswine:

Prem,

Nice thought but are you nucking futs? That much time, Alaska to Argentina, in a Jeep Cherokee and a little 6x10 cargo with the wife? I love her dearly and fully realize, as Chief Dan George said in the movie The Outlaw Josey Wales, "We must endeavor to persevere." Still there is a limit to our ability to "Persevere" in confined quarters for great lengths of time. :noyes:

Prem, I'm going to make sure my husband doesn't watch your posts. He would probably start lobbying for that trip from AK to Argentina even though it's beyond our pay grade. :)

We met a German couple last summer who had been traveling the globe on bikes for a few years (ETA: yeah, they saw lots of Argentina and pretty much everything else in between!) and were only finally heading back home from Washington state, north through Canada, and more or less on to the east coast where they were going to get a plane hop across the pond. Wish I'd thought of that before settling down to 'normal' life... or what passes for 'normal' in our case, lol....

You can see their web page here:
http://www.weltenbummler2003.de/English/Index.htm
They were using Rohloff speed hubs instead of standard derailleurs, and while they might have added a little weight I think only had to overhaul them once on the whole trip. Plus they could shift into any gear they wanted while totally stopped, which was a major advantage when having to get a really heavy loaded rig re-started. You can see their 2007 report on the performance of the hubs (only 4 years in, heh) here:
http://www.rohloff.de/en/news/news_rss/ ... index.html

We'll be taking the more traditional route for now, working fer the man, making house payments, and hauling bikes to places on the weekends. Hopefully with a CT serving as base camp in the next couple years.
