Woman Dies After Silicone Injections to Buttocks

Hugh Collins Contributor
(July 31) -- Striving for the perfect body may have cost one woman in California her life.

Mayra Lissette Contreras, 22, died after receiving injections of silicone to the buttocks, CBS reports. Autopsy results are still pending, but she is thought to have died from respiratory problems after the operation.

"Stories like this are all too common," cosmetic surgeon Michael Kane told CBS. "I don't know any licensed professional who would inject large amounts of silicone into the body."

When silicone is used for breast implants, it is medical-grade and placed in the body in a capsule.

Underground cosmetic surgeons are not always so careful, using industrial silicone and injecting large quantities of the substance, rather than implanting it.

Silicone injected into the body can have serious medical consequences. These range from heavy scarring to death from breathing problems – as appears to be what happened in Contreras's case.

"It's easy for an injector to hit a vein, the silicon hits the bloodstream and goes to the lungs," Colin Stewart, a columnist for The Orange County Register, told CNN.

Police are now hunting for the two sisters, Alejandra Viveros and Guadalupe Viveros, who are believed to have performed the operation.

The two women were taken into custody on June 21 for practicing medicine without a license, according to The Los Angeles Times. Authorities held the sisters on bail of $20,000, then released them.

The women have gone on the run and may have fled to Mexico.

In the end she paid for this dearly.

Since someone actually died, no joking comebacks. It's sad how far people (men too now) are taking cosmetic surgery in our society. Even more sad is why the deep internal need for it? Esteem and self-worth by knife.

Ugh. It's sad and stupid. I can't believe the lengths some people will go to conform to society's ideals.

My first reaction to this was "good, another superficial idiot removed from the gene pool," but Scott is right. What is it that makes people do this?

There are actually silicon-injecting parties in many of the transgender communities. I can't remember how long ago I read the article and it could have been from the Washington Post, but I'm not certain (I like to give accurate references.. scientist thing). I know it's been happening for a while. They inject window/door grade silicon from big box stores. It makes me very sad and also gives me the hebbie geebies a bit as well.

I have seen autopsy pictures from the results of "pumping" silicone. A very bad way to die. I read a monograph of the Travesti in Brazil with original text from informant s the translation from Brazilian Portuguese, not a very good job of translation (I can read Portuguese). "Pumping" is fairly common among transgender sex workers in the US to look more feminine to the point of body dysmorphic disorder (i.e. addiction to plastic surgery). Many M to F trans folks are forced into sex work because of job discrimination. There are btw 13.5 million transgender individuals in the US almost equally even divided between F to M and M to F.

Shadowcatcher, I have to question you statistic pf 13.5 million transgenders in the US--if my feeble math skills are right that's about 4.5% (assuming US population of 300 million). Just sounds way too high to me. (Not that it is of great importance to this discussion.) Can you possibly check your facts and/or provide reference?

Best,

This was a study done for the insurance industry and has since been replicated three times the most recently by one of the big three auto companies. The break down is 80% cross dresser and that includes both sexes about equally though many/most women may not be aware that they are, it is culturally acceptable to dress male. 16% transgenderist (may cross live full time) pre-op and no-op transsexuals and 4% Post-Op transsexuals about 400,000 in the US. This later number was also confirmed by another study done earlier.
One way to look at this is cross culturally and the transgender Kathoey of Thailand are a prime example in a culture that is basically Buddhist and a great deal more tolerant of diversity they are a great deal more visible. There are historical records of gender variant individuals going back 4,000+ years and prehistoric evidence going back 6,000.

I did say gender variant which includes those that are intersexed. Prehistoric is highly variable as to when it actually happens, it is simply prior to written language. The oldest evidence is primarily pottery figurines coming from what is now Greece dating back about 6,000 years with ambiguous gender. The first historical evidence comes from the Code of Hammurabi about 1790BCE and is inferential as are a number of Biblical references.

Can you say 'natural selection'? My son reminds me of this, frequently, when we discuss some of the insane current events, accidents, deaths. Yes, it is sad. The saddest part, to me, is how the culprits were released and will probably never be found.

Hey, who knows? If they were stupid enough to practice without a license once...
