Finally took Grandaughter out

Postby southpennrailroad » Sun Aug 01, 2010 6:56 am

My son is very protective of his seven year old daughter. But he finally let me take her out for the day and Sarah said she had a great time. We first went to a movie she choose and then went to Living Treasure animal zoo. Donegal, Pa. After which we were suppose to go to the old abandoned turnpike (Breezewood, Pa.) to travel through the dark 1.3 mile long tunnel. Instead we stopped at Koosier SP and let her cool her feet in the lake. (No bathing suit but with her getting friendly with some other girls soon found her ALL wet.) (Called her dad and he said wait! Sarah had no bathing suit how did she go swimming? Impulse decision! But she had a great time. Then went off to see a private fish hatchery that she said that most likely she would never have gotten to see with her dad. Scared her half to death when the fish jumped up out of the water after the food she got to throw into the fish pool.

I think she is opposite her parents who like city attractions and instead she does like the country. I think however that before she goes camping overnight that that may take a year. I love her laugh and wide eyes when she see's strange things and sites.

The problem is that they are city people and planning would be like pulling teeth. I told them that the hatchery owners wants to give us a free fish for a meal (Trout) but I felt that my son should at least see where it is coming from and meet the owner.

we live on the edge of a small town here. right behind the house is 40 acres of corn at the moment. about 1/4 way into the feild is a slough full of water, the corn is close to 7 ft tall or more ad to a kid its a never ending forest.. lolol yea, they could get lost but how else can you learn?
I totally understand where your grandaughter is coming from tho, we have parents like that here... most of the time way overly protective. some is good, too much stifles the childs ability to learn at their own speed and all those wonders that make kids kids...

Your grand daughter isn't going to get any scars or great stories at that rate!

Keep posting your stories when you're able. I'd love to have grand kids some day and I'd like to think that I'd be the Grandpa that would take them on adventures like yours!

I now know to bring extra cloths. Long pants, socks, shirt, short pants for swimming. Here are a few shots from that day.

I should have taken shots from the fish hatchery as well as the lake. But I had forgotten the camera each time because I was watching her excitement on her face more.

Years ago she would ask her dad "Why does grandpa always take pictures" When grandma died years later she got her answer and now understands.
