Good towing vehicle

Postby azthedog » Sun Aug 01, 2010 8:21 pm

Hello! I am new to this forum and have been admiring TD trailers for a couple of years now. I am really hoping to get one in the very near future and am just wondering what kind of vehicle is good for towing one. After poking around on this forum, it looks like just about anything will work. I would love to hear from the "experts" though!! :D

BTW, I live in Phoenix, AZ. I am really looking forward to owning a TD and going on some camping trips. It has been a long time since I have been camping and there are a lot of areas in AZ and surrounding states that I would love to explore!!

Yer tow vehicle really depends on the weight of yer teardrop. "I" have a 2005 Little Guy that I rebuilt and tow it with my vintage 1965 VW Bug.

I call my TD: my "canned o minimum" and it is a 4 wide that weighs 775lbs empty.

I have NO galley. I jsut put all my camp stuff inside and take it out when I arrive. It's really NOT any trouble. I got a folding picnic table, the stove, and all the 'other" stuff and it just sets up outside.

I use mt teardrop fer car shows so I left the galley ouit to display my "themes" ( I got 30 of em)

So....if ya got a relatively lite teardrop, you can tow it with jus bout ANYTHING.

Happy Trails !!

Wendi,

You are absolutely right, 'just about anything will work'. You can go for mileage or you can go for power. It just depends on the person's preference.

Right now, we tow with our Ford Explorer however if we needed to go for mileage then we would have to get a tow package for my wife's Dodge Caliber.

The best vehicle is the one that you use.

Wendi

I tow "Ducky" ( 4 x 8 homebuilt replica of 1947 KIT ) with my Honda Element and while not the fastest on the road (especially on hills ), we get where we want to go !! Tho I haven't weighed her, the guy who built her told me she weighs in at approx 800 +/- pounds. Mileage is 20 mpg, give or take.

Have fun with the teardrop search, found mine on Craigslist and only 11 miles from my house !!

We have two people in SouthCentral that tow with Mini Coopers, and one who tows with a Miata.

I'm partial to station wagons myself. They hold a lot, and drive like a car.

If you tow with a passenger car with and automatic transmission, it is highly recommended that you invest in a transmission cooler. Since you are in Arizona, that's probably a good thing for your car, anyway.

I tow my extra large 5 x 10 x 5 Weekender with a Nissan Frontier V6. My previous teardrop, about 700 lbs, Itowed with a Honda CR/V with no problems whatsoever.

Wendi, depending on where you live in Phoenix, Eddie often shows off his teardrop at the car show in the parking lot on the Southeast corner of 51st Ave and Bell Rd, by the restaurant called Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers.

There is another where some of the guys go, including SSRJim, on 83rd Ave & Lake Pleasant, in the Safeway parking lot. I believe that one is on Wednesday nights.

You should PM them before you go, to make sure they will be there. Who knows, perhaps they will chime in on this thread. Both of these gentlemen have built many teardrops apiece. Eddie's on #5 and I think SSRJim has done at least 4.
God Bless

Yes I am here Wendi, Where about in Phoenix do you live. I do plan on being at 81st and Union Hills on Saturday night not 83rd the usual car night. It is a special event at Arizona Pizza Company parking lot. I don't plan on taking my tear to Friday night unless you want to come see it. What type of car do you have now it might be just fine.

That show is on Saturday Nights. The number of cars have been down the last month or so but it is hot. Anyway I'm there most Saturday nights.

That is a tight parking lot. I'm considering it but more likely go to the usual lot.
