I've been lurking here for a month or so and have decided to start on an offroad teardrop build in the next few weeks. I have a military M35A2 that has been my project since last October and it is almost done (what am I talking about, my projects are never completely done).
I'm an RN and only work 2 12 hour shifts every weekend. Wife is an LPN and does the same. So I have a lot of free time. Having our first baby girl in December, so that may slow the projects down a little, we will see. I also work on my house a lot which is a Grist Mill built in 1813. Only live in the first two floors of it so far. It's a work in progress too.
Anyway, I'm collecting parts so that I can get a good start on this thing. I'd like to have it completed by next July for the local PAJeeps show in York, PA and some local trail rides / camping. The tow vehicle is my wifes '10 Jeep Unlimited Mountain Edition.
So far, I've got a pop up frame in excellent condition, already stripped down as the previous owner was going to build a cargo trailer but is getting married instead. Paid $75 delivered. Also picked up a set of like new Jeep wheels that match her jeep ($150) and 4 BFG 31" mud terrains (free).
My plan is for a 5x10 frame with a 5x8 box, tires and Gerry cans up front, custom sized axle with e brakes, and wood construction w/epoxy and automotive basecoat clearcoat (wife wants it matching rescue green).
My main concern right now is the 6.25 backspacing of these wheels and what size axle to go with for clearance.
Can't wait to start, should be fun.
