I've wanted to build a teardrop for a while now. I first ran across the teardrop concept about 10 years ago when I was looking for information on light travel trailers. Back then I wanted to build one, but I never got to it. It's probably better that I didn't, because back then I was a lot younger, pretty impatient about doing things and never really took the time to do things right. That's changed, and I'm ready to put in a lot of time to build this, and build it right.
My wife and I (and the pooches) love to travel. I'm driving a Subaru wagon now, which has actually served as our sleeping quarters on more than one road trip, and it's got a lot less sleeping room than a teardrop. We're notoriously bad about planning too far ahead as far as places to stay on a road trip, and by the time we get into a town, all the motels are full or asking for exorbitant rates. So we end up camping a lot. While there's nothing wrong with tent camping... aside from building the tent in the dark, finding a fairly level spot, worrying about rain or the howling winds we always seem to attract, either freezing or cooking in the weather, taking down and repacking, etc... the idea of having a little place to stay is very appealing.
I've got a woody-type trailer in mind. Something with a not-too-complicated galley. I do want to wire it up for a stereo, with speakers in the berth and the galley, and maybe a small TV/DVD for those rainy nights when hanging around outdoors isn't a great option. A few lights and a vent fan in the berth. I'm planning to keep it simpler and smaller this first time around, so it'll be a 4'x8'. And my second one may even be smaller! I may take what I learn from this project and apply it to build a motorcycle teardrop, but that's down the road.
I've got a wedding to go to 1000 miles away in September of next year. I'm hoping to have the trailer ready in time for that, and with any luck it could be even sooner (hey, it's over a year off, so there's plenty of time.) I also have to build a lean-to on my shed so that I have a sheltered spot to work on it and store material, but this was something I had planned to build whether or not I built the trailer, and it's only a weekend project. Monsoon season has delayed that one.
Looks like as far as finding information, I've hit the jackpot here. Looking forward to hanging around here, since there's a ton to learn. (And you guys have a ton of trailers that are drool-worthy!)
