1957 Serro Scotty Teardrop in RV Hall Of Fame Museum

Postby fromeo » Mon Aug 30, 2010 11:48 am

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I made a trip out to Elkhart, Indiana to pick up some parts for the build. While we were there we stopped to check out the RV Hall of Fame and their museum. On display was this 1957 Serro Scotty Teardrop that I thought you folks (especially Len) would like to see. Sorry for the poor quality, all I had with me was the cell phone. :(

Thanks for the Post.

Yes John Serro made a Teardrop Trailer. However they were not labeled as Serro Scotty's.

They had the Scotty Dog on the emblem but not the word "Scotty"

Just Serro.

They were called Serro Sportsman Juniors.

Duno why?? Or when it changed??

Some of us "Nit picking History guys" are wondering if the front decal on the one in the museum is correct??

Did they have the Rear Door Scotty there also? In the past they did have it on display. I own one and love it.

There are internet sites for the Scotties and you can get info from the Rv hall of fame. When I found my rear door they sent me a but load of info at no charge. They were as excited as I was when I told them about the rear door. There are lots of Jr. out there but only a few of the rear door. But you never know what the next barn door may be hiding.

Scotty history is real sketchy.

There plant in Irwin burned to the ground in 1997 and a lot of facts went with it.

So there are a lot of Rumors out there...but that's what makes it interesting.

I have met and talked to a lot of old employees from the Irwin Plant. There are some real interesting, and unprovable stories that aren't found written down anywhere.

One story was about the Scotty Rear Door that though it was offered in 1959 and 1960 all were made in 1959. Rumor was they guessed wrong and overbuilt.

Another was about the 13' Hilander. Not a 15', a 13' Rumor has it John Serro and his wife Anna went to a Serro Scotty Owners Association. (SSOA) Rally in it. If so then lots of people saw it. But???? Only a few remeber it.

John Serro hit the market at exactly the right time and rode that wave for 40 years.

No, the decal on the front of the Scotty teardrop (Sportsman, Jr.) is not accurate. They didn't use any decals on them and even after they started using decals - in 1961, I believe, that decal was not used. That decal was used on the front of Scottys later on.

The 13' HiLander isn't a myth however it was just a 13' Gaucho inside - it wasn't the HiLander interior. No one seems to know what happened to it, but many folks would love to have it.

Kevin - yes, the Rear Door is still at the RV Museum - I have pics of it here:
http://www.nationalserroscotty.org/rebuilds/59reardoor/ It appears to be all original except for the taillights. Interior pics show the table that was hinged to and folded down from the wall.

I know Nancy Kroes who runs the National Serro Scotty Organization has one as well, and I believe she's a member on here. I'll give her a nudge to reply.

Hi Pat - great minds and all that - our replies must have crossed paths! Posted the pics of the RV Museum's Rear Door for Kevin. I know he was curious too about the table as it was missing in his.

Hey Nancy! Good to see you on here. I took my Scotty HiLander out this weekend camping for the first time since I bought it from Bob and Carla Bak. It's a sweet camper! Thanks for hooking me up with them!

Great Becca - glad you like it. I got a chance to see that Scotty at the NSSO camp-out down in St. Augustine earlier this year. It is a nice one. And Carly and Bob - good people!
