LED Lights

Postby down under tech » Fri Aug 13, 2010 12:31 am

Hi jkidd6339: I bought regular TT dome/overhead lights for my TD. I bought 3 of them. I will use two for the overhead lights and one for a reading light at the front of the TD. I then bought LED bulbs that go in place of the incandescent bulbs. They are bright too. I found a place on ebay (can't remember who I got them from) and they were a lot cheaper than the ones you were talking about. Just search for 1141 or 1156 led bulbs. Get the ones that are arranged all the way around the bulb and not the ones that are only placed on the ends. This way you will have better lighting from them.

I hope this helps you. I want a laser cutter, too. How much was that or is it something you have at work?

Take care,
Johnny D.

I think those would work for the ceiling light. What I was looking for in the reading lights was one that would mount on a vertical wall. I find the $40 ones look really cheap. With the amount of time I have put into the trailer I want to find something that looks kind of unique. I was at HD today and found some track lighting that that looked nice and I might be able to rewire to 12 volt by taking the guts out of some landscape lights and moving them into the track lights. If I modify the landscape lights they don't look to bad either. Just a thought. The laser is a commercial one there are cheaper ones out there. Mine was 23K with all of it's options. I bought it to start another business and then got to busy to use it!

Posting on your build thread so that I can keep up-to-date on the ideas and design tricks that I hope to incorporate in my build.

I especially like the look of the diamond tread plate trim to dress up the look of the bottom edge. I hope to do the same and perhaps add diamond tread plate angle on the edges and more plate on a belt line and around the door.

Reading Lights...

Postby down under tech » Sat Sep 04, 2010 10:25 am

Hi jkidd6339: Here are some reading lights you can mount on the side walls and they are not to pricey. Take a look at them and see if any of them are what you might be looking for.

Your trailer is looking exceptionally well built. I can see why you are striving for quality items to include in your build. You will find the perfect lights on your own, but I am just giving you ideas as to the ones you can use. I hope this helps you.

OK, the bottom one is more pricey...

Thanks Mike it was a quick and easy way to hide the trailer frame.

Johnny D. Thanks for the post. I have been to busy playing to work on the trailer. But I think I found a solution. I found an LED light off doctorled.com that is very bright with a single led and it fits into a track light fixture from home depot. Now I just have to rework the base so it will fit. They will still end up costing me 55 or 60 dollars each but they will be a little different than the standard RV lights out there and less than the boat led lights. Now I just need to find some time to get the work done.

Easy way to do the lights are using MR-11 lights they are commonly used in track lighting and landscaping lights. Led replacement bulbs are all over the Internet and are made to run at 12v dc. ;)

 http://www.superbrightleds.com/

This is where we buy our LED's. Have used 12V vehicle applications for the TD and some of our older motorcycles with limited electrical systems (6V) and replacement flashlight bulbs. Just ordered some a month ago to replace the dome light in our TD. It was basically an 1156 style 12V bulb.

That website has a lot too choose from and lower prices too. That is the type I'm looking for. I haven't been working on the tear lately. I have been getting in my trips to the lake instead. When the weather turns a little I'll get back to it.

Well I finnaly got around to finishing my cabin lights. A single incandescent bulb in the dome light draws 900 milliamps. The reading lights are a single 3 watt led in warm light and they now draw 180 milliamps. The dome light uses 9 1 watt leds on a pc board and draws 192 milliamps. I can run all the interior lights and not draw the power of 1 incandescent bulb. I'm going to build a power pak that has 2 9 amp sealed lead acid batteries in it, to supply power. I will be able to move this to the car, tent, teardrop for power and charge off of the car when I'm driving. Here are some progress pics.

The rain and the snow just keep coming. I gave up trying to make it to Lake Powell this winter because of the storms. I finally got a trip in April and one in May. Since I wasn't using the boat I put it in the shop and worked on it for the winter. The Teardrop just sat under a cover out in the snow all winter long. Well the boat is in the driveway now and yesterday I got to work on the Tear all day long. I didn't get a lot accomplished, I made a ton of scrap pieces and a lot of sawdust. I have never made style and rail doors before so there was a lot experimenting. At the end of the day I had 2 doors glued up. I thought I would have all 6 but it didn't work out that way. I'm not in any rush so I guess I will save the other for another day.

Here is some pictures of the cabin inside. I have three pieces of trim left to do and the cabin will be finished. For now I am going to do some work in the galley area and then I'll move back to the cabin.Finished the cabinet doors and hung them, Put the mattress back in. The last time I camped I just through in a camping pad and went. I sure will be happy to have the number bed mattress back in, it makes for a much better night sleep. Pictures a little distorted very wide angle lens .

Thanks Gary

I guess there isn't any real rush it is campable. I got the four doors for the galley made and glued up today. I didn't make near as much scrap as I did on the first two doors. I did have to make a couple of pieces over because of chipping.
