Way off topic: Modified Tomahawk

Postby TwilightLane » Sat Sep 04, 2010 10:32 pm

Well it's been way too hot and I've been way too busy to work on the Cubbie. But I did get a wild hair and modify a tomahawk. I think it turned out pretty cool.

It started off like this. Pretty boring. A trail hawk from Cold Steel. You can find them numerous places on the interwebs.

After stripping the head, boiling it in vineger, re-shaping the cutting edge and polishing the poll. After sanding the handle, staining it, burning in a 'four directions' symbol, applying polyurathane, drilling a lanyard hole, using a piece of brass tube to jazz it up...

Whaddya think??

Much nicer, than the glossy black that was on the head originally

going to be used by the wood pile, when camping?

Me? Nooooooooooo, I wouldn't do such a thing! First, I'd have to sneak up on him and with that edge, I ain't tryin' it.

Okay, why did you boil the head in vinegar?

Did you seal the iron with some sort of sealant?

Is your edge razor sharp?

I bought a Gransfors Bruks axe about 7 years ago and love it!! I was driven to buy it because every one is hand made in Sweden...... from the head to the handle. The blacksmith even stamps his initials in the head after he hand forges it. It is razor sharp, holds an edge like no other and even comes with an owners manual. There's even a section in it to tell you how to "safely" throw it overhand into a stump. At the time, I think I paid about $70 dollars for it and now they are over 90. I'd buy more of their products but I wouldn't have enough money to ever go camping again............

Nice Hawk. My brother was a mountain man renactor and he had all kinds of tomahawks. My favorite one he had was one that had a heart cut out of the head.
