Wheel bearing grease question

Postby LDK » Sun Sep 05, 2010 9:33 pm

I re-packed the bearings on my trailer a few weeks back with a wal-mart grease called super tech multi-duty complex hi-temp grease. It's a red color grease. Has anybody else used this kind of grease before? I'm a thinkin I might of screwed up. Larry

I use a "red" grease for bearings.... Read the can (fine print) if it say for bearing you are good...

It's a lithium complex N.L.G.I. Grade 2 and it says not to mix greases of different type. ???????? It says to repack according to manufacturer's instructions. It was the only grease wal-mart had at that time.

Larry,

Did you clean and re pack the bearings, or just add grease to the existing grease in the bearings?

If you just added grease without using solvent to clean out the old grease and dirt, then you may have problems down the road as lithium doesn't get along with moly or teflon additives in other grease.

No damage done yet, you just need to get them cleaned out so you have only one type of grease in them.

yes I clean the bearings. I used mineral spirits and blew them out with my air compressor. I also wiped out the hub the best I could. I guess I shouldn't have settled with that kind of grease. ---------Larry

Larry

No problem, with the grease itself, it is the mixing of two greases with different compositions

We us a special grease in our Actuators for aircraft flight surface control
costs nearly $300 if bought in a 10oz tube for a standard grease gun.

but if mixed with a just a small amount of moly grease, it will break down and would be worthless in a very short length of time.

So just use a solvent, your mineral spirits should be fine, wipe them down good, your air will work but don't spin the bearing with the air.

Repack with your new grease and you should be fine for another year.

Larry,

Since you used solvent to clean the bearings, and did a decent job wiping out the hubs, you'll be fine.
The grease you bought is fine for wheel bearings.
It is a water resistant grease that resists meltdown and leakage.

I've used it (the evil mart grease) in a pinch before, but normally I run a full synthetic grease by Amsoil.
