My Back Patio

Postby Tadlan » Sun Sep 05, 2010 3:42 pm

Just wanted to share some craftman stuff. I built some custom benches and a fireplace for my back patio. The fireplace takes the gel fuel canisters. I look forward to using it this fall. I am working on some artwork for the walls, a shade sail for the summer sun, and I plan on building an outdoor bed in the other corner. Should be nice to have an additional "room" in my condo.

P.S. I also built the planter boxes on the left, painted the cinderblock wall, and ran a drip system for all the plants.

This is my neighbor's...pretty much a before of mine:

A great little oasis you have created! Ah, the joys of the burbs. We recently bought an end-unit townhome, and so have a little more yard to tinker in. I'm amazed at how many of our neighbors don't use their back yards. They are small yards, laughable to some, I'm sure (heck, laughable to me before I moved down to the big city - I grew up on a sawmill in the country on Cape Cod), but it's additional living space to us...how can you not use it? Big plans for our beloved little postage stamp out there. You have to get creative in small spaces.

Yours is really lovely...your effort and care is obvious. :applause:

There is a blog out there called Life on the Balcony. I draw some inspiration from it.

What a great job you've done with your patio! Just goes to show that small spaces can be big on style and functionality. Congrats.

wow.. mixed emotions here. I think what you did looks great..

but wow! that's your backyard?

My backyard is maybe 37 acres [we have 40 total] ... and I have access to another few hundred wooded acres... and I feel a little crowded in..

Looks good. It is kind of an urban oasis. Will that gel-fuel fireplace give off some decent heat in the winter, or is it more for chilly spring and fall evenings?

is that a raised garden on the left? Going by the picture of the neighbor's deck, it doesn't look like you can plant much without building up.

I'm a member of the tiny backyard club, too. I have a zero-lot-line house -- very small yard. I love it. I can do my yard-work in fifteen minutes flat.

And, Glenn, I never have to mow my roof. ;)

Way to rub it in Glenn. :(
I would love to have more of a backyard, but you make do with what ya got.
Yes, raised beds on the left built up with cedar.
In my tiny "yard" I have four tomato plants that have given me tons and tons of tomatoes so far (yellow pear, kellogs heirloom, and big red), five bell pepper plants, lemons, turnips, a huge zucchini plant, carrots, celery, rosemary, sage, lemon thyme, basil, parsley, and lavender.

The gel fuel gives off some good heat. My fireplace takes two canisters so it pumps out more. It is nice in spring, fall, and winter. My winters are pretty mild.

Thanks for the compliments. I plan on translating my style over to my TD. Here is a taste of what else I have done in my tiny condo.

Looks like a "Designed To Sell" episode. Good work.

My backyard is even smaller. It's not really mine. When I step out the door, my foot lands on common property. That's fine by me. I don't mow and blow it.

Don't worry Glenn. I'm not all that beat up about it. :)
Someday I will own several acres in the woods and built my off-the-grid cabin out of shipping containers. Until then, I have my patio.

I also do enjoy my HGTV. My wife is very happy with the results of my tv obsessions.

I didn't think I was rubbing anything in. I was trying to make a compliment.

I thought the raised beds that slope down to that narrow strip of dirt was a great idea. You have a larger planting area, and it still drains into open soil. Good idea.

Oh, I just realized that you were referring to the other Glenn -- the sheep, not the dog.
