Veggie-Wielding Woman Deters Bear

Vegetables may be the only defensive weapon not strictly regulated in DC. From now on I might just walk tall and carry a big zucchini. Or cucumber.

Zucchini may be overkill for east coast bears. A medium carrot might do the job back here.

I'm sure that must be what the bear was thinking. He figured he better turn that crazy woman loose while he could still do it without help......

You must be a cat person.

A bigass German Shepherd went after my 30 pound terrier in a park once. Only once. The Shepherd's owner didn't apologize. Instead she was mad at me for "hurting" her dog.

I didn't hesitate for a second. My pet was in danger. I'd probably jump into it with a bear, too. It kind of an instinct. Passion overrides reason.

I think I'd want to have something more substantial than a zucchini to fight with.

BTW, both dogs were on a leash in the park that day. She just couldn't control hers. Her dog was not really hurt -- other than its pride.

Did you notice the link on the web page to the story about the cows whupping up on a bear. Yep, cows kick bear ass. Sweet.

No, no...I love dogs...and cats. But I wouldn't have had my dog unattended outside where bears roam. I guess she didn't have time to get a weapon except for the veggie.

I too would fight for my dog - probably fight a panther, but a bear - I would have kept some lead power very close. I'm just so scared of bears.

I don't know - maybe if I were in her situation I would have done the same thing. I'd just have to hose the crap out of my pants after!
