Camper Height

Postby droid_ca » Thu Sep 30, 2010 5:31 am

Hello I'm really new here and I've been searching all over this forum but I cant seem to find what is the basic height of your TD compaired to your tow vehicle as I have a 3/4 ton pick up and plenty of power to pull just about any trailer but I've been really thinking about these TD's so I might have some bizzare questions but please just bear with me Thanks

They generally create a square from dead ahead

A 4 wide is 4' tall +/-

A 5 wide is 5' tall +/- (now only 4' per gage)

and a 6 wide is generally the exception .
I have seen them 4' ,5', 6' ,and up (now only 4' per gage)

This measurement is the box itsself The frame height
in most cases is 14" to 18" which would be added to
the box height.

P.S. Big "D" welcome to the insanity Bob

An afterthought~~~

Above you will find 2 links
"vintage plans" and the "design library"

These contain a great wealth of profiles and build design info.

I gained a great headstart on my build studying the vintage section.

No sense in reinventing the wheel ! :)

Excuse me Mr. Bob. But I believe the man is talking about a TD (teardrop). Which in general is 4 feet high with maybe another foot of ground clearance. It doesn't mater if it is 4' or 5' wide. And then there are some that are 6' wide. If it's any higher, for the most part it's just a tiny trailer.

well thank you for the information I'm kinda wondering more cause of how tall my truck is and I wasn't wanting it to look missplaced cause my truck is aproximately 8 foot 1 inch to the top of the cab and I know from what I have been reading that it should be under the slip stream of the tow vehicle I'm just afraid that if I buuild it 5 or even 6 that it would look more like a chihuahua humping a pitbull excuse the analagy

he he...no biggie, you can do it any size you want, as long as you are comfortable inside, as they say, normally the trailers stay at around 16 inch tall, ( I am not an expert, and I have seen some trailers that are very tall, so I may be wrong) so a build over the frame should be according to what you like...you can see this thread on how to " stretch" the plywood:

I just cheked and my box height is 73 inches so then if I added the 18 Id get I'd get a trailer height of 7 foot 7 inches Well I'd be able to fit a lot of stuff in it thats for sure well thanks for the help and if I could get ome more feed back on the height issue that would be great

You could save a lot of time just making the trailer " box" ( teardrop, box, etc) 4 feet high, ( the width of a plywood sheet) plus the 16/18 inches of the trailer bed, at about 5 1/2 feet tall, it's a respectable size, and you can put a lot of stuff in it, I have made mine that way and I can sit inside ( and I am not a short person)... we can only suggest , but the one who will do the building is you, it's only a matter of what you want to do.

I am still reading lots of stuff over here, and I am amazed at how little I knew when I made mine, take it easy and enjoy your " teardrop time"

...somewhere in the neighborhood of 5' tall would be the most common...that would be a foot of ground clearance and 4' of camper height...of course, the greatest thing about building your own is...building your own, thataway, you can build perzactely whatcha want and to heck with conventions...FYI, I have seen Tears towed by just about anything and regardless of size they are still a way cool way to camp...and look it as well........................

now then what is the standard for it to be a TTT if its not a TD as I would really like to jave a full ceiling I have a few ideas on paper right now just have to sort out wich ones I really want if space is going to be a big thing cause I'm almost thinking 18 footer could definately have its advantages I'm also leaning towards some bigger tires tohandle the weight unless I go more then one axel .....for the guys who do go more then one how many do they or have they gone???? that could be kinda interesting hmmmmmmmm but for now I'll stick to my original quwstion about the height for my truck

Oh well there is plenty of room for a fat man and his chubby wife and their 2 dogs in their "Tiny trailer"

One thing to remember is that the vehicle you have now will not be the vehicle you have in the future and at better than $1 per (and it aint gallon) you may wish to plan on something that can be towed by a more fuel efficient vehicle. Do not worry about it fitting the truck (which you may not have in the future) and look at designs that fill your needs i.e. grasshopper or...

so I got woken up last night and I had time to think about what I wanted to do for my TD and Ive come to somewhat of a conclusion I need to do it atleast 6 feet wide so I can fit my bed in sideways to make ample room for more space since I'm coing to be going wth a full size automotive tire and not a little trailer tire I could put a drop floor in it to give me the space that I'm needing I would like to be able to use this for extended periods at a time the last time I tented it it was at a camp ground but I must say I was there for a month ....(man I miss my old job) but the major hard part for me is I have to bring my pets dogs arre fine but I have a parrot as well and that cage takes up space no matter how you look at it so he needs to have his own space in the tear too

No need to get grumpy, the teardrop as I understand it, it's about the shape, there are some huge ones, it's just a matter of personal taste or individual needs...., size is just an option.

check this link and see, there are microlights, and medium size teardrops....
