Veterans Day Celebration/WWII Nose Art

Postby alffink » Mon Oct 11, 2010 12:06 pm

A discussion on jalosie windows was going on over on the construction page when Eddie Millers, hatch Artwork came up....done by Jerri (Victory Girl) out of Cable Airport, Upland CA

Anyway one thing leads to another....

If ya like vintage aircraft, military but mainly general aviation

For those that enjoy this sort of thing.....who doesn't??

Jerri (VictoryGirl) usually has a booth at the Flabob airport, Veterans Day celebration...That's in Riverside CA

Oh yes, near the Solar Telescopes :eyebrows:

This one is in WWI and WWII flavors...very different in todays world
Flabob is one of the oldest airports in the USA, and is the home for the EAA Chapter I, if your a pilot with a vintage aircraft this is a great fly-in

Oh, Saturday November 6, if your interested, just google Flabob Airport.

I don't have the 2011 dates yet, but if you enjoy WW2 nose art, there's an event worth visiting in Midland, Texas every fall -- AIRSHO.

I spent Saturday at the latest one. Still a little footsore and a lot sunburnt.
It kicked off with F-16 flybys and finished up 4 1/2 hours later with a missing man formation of warbirds. In between we saw aircraft re-enact Pearl Harbor, 30 Seconds over Tokyo, Ploesti, Dresden ... and Hiroshima. Yes, the B-29 flew over Midland for AIRSHO this year. There's only one flying-shape B-29 Superfortress in the world. It lives at the CAF hangar in Midland, and it's going on a national tour called Red White and Loud this coming year with Aaron Tippin.

We saw a Strike Eagle demo and a B-1-B Lancer (aka Bone) demo, and a C-17 heritage flight side-by-side with a C-47 from WWII. We saw a jetpowered sailplane and a twin Beech and a highly-modified WACO, and we listened to Pratt & Whitneys, Rolls Royce Merlins, and every imaginable variation of aircraft engine in between, and there were *explosions* too ... oh, and Johnny Rutherford exhibiting a Chapparal race car.

It's like a cross between a county fair, an airbase open house, and a military history buffs' trade show.

The nearest Texas State Park is at Monahans (aka the Sandhills).
It's a pretty awesome place, but one thing it's *not* this time of year is, necessarily, "cool". Although the nights are balmy.

We have some great airshows out here, especially out of Chino with the Planes of fame and such, Miramar, March, Edwards......

But Flabob isn't the regular airshow, you could expect the field to still have grass runways, the main runway, actually the only runway is probably smaller than most taxi ways, there is no control tower, I'm not a pilot, what the proper term? Visual Rules only.

You might be able to down but if'n your much bigger than a DC-3 you may have trouble getting up again

When I say vintage, for the most part were talking pre WWII

This is a classic, veterans day celebration vintage aircaft, car show, military parade, mostly vets....just a great small town celebration, built around a small and very old airport.

A great day to be had by all
