Hello from Massachusetts

Postby Jim Edgerly » Thu Sep 30, 2010 8:23 am

Hi, I'm Jim, and I have been bitten by the Teardrop Bug! I see my immediate future containing a teardrop camper. I also see no need to reinvent the wheel. I plan on stealing plans and ideas (I would borrow them but I have no intention of returning them once they are incorporated into my build) from those who have gone before me, modifying them to suit my needs, building on them, and incorporating the best of the best into my build. The knowledge base that is contained in this file is so incredibly awesome that it makes me feel blessed to have stumbled across it. I plan on ordering my 5x8 trailer in the next couple of days, assembling it, and letting it sit in my unattached (cold in NE) garage over the winter until the warmth of spring allows me to go further. During the winter I plan on building a 1/4 scale model in my workshop, 15" wide by 24" long, before committing to full scale production of my woody. If I have a design flaw I want to find it before full scale production begins.

My needs are simple. An upgrade from "on the ground tent camping". Needs to be 5'x8' to fit me, my wife, and my 20 lb Schnoodle, a woody with a vented aluminum roof, 14" wheels, electric brakes, 110v/12v, insulated, and a stunning galley. My estimate is that I can have it all for $4500-$5000, which my wife feels comfortable committing to this project.

I have read countless articles in here already, book marked my favorite couple dozen, and plan on doing lots more reading during the winter. I also expect I will have a few questions to ask along my journey.

I thank you all for your expertise in this subject matter.

Jim

Welcome from a displaced Southcoaster. I was born and raised in Acushnet, MA and moved down here three years ago. I still get home to see family, but I remain terribly homesick. Anyhoo, you have stumbled down a wonderful rabbit hole here, but you know that already. Do keep us posted on the build...sounds like you're fired up and ready to create something great. Also, my brother Barry is the New England Chapter Director of the Tearjerkers group, so don't hesitate to contact him regarding gatherings in the area. His trailer is a home-built woody also.

Welcome! I'm originally from North Andover, MA then moved to Londonderry, NH and now I'm in Phoenix, AZ. If you haven't ordered your trailer yet, I recommend the 5X8 from Northern Tool, pretty sure it's on sale for $510 right now with free shipping. We'll be finishing assembly on our trailer tomorrow morning, then maybe starting on some woodwork. We actually have the opposite problem as you, we had to wait until winter to build because it's so hot here!

Jim,

I'm down here in Acushnet and noticed your considering a harbor freight trailer. One of the members of the New England Tearjerkers builds a beautiful trailer chassis on torsion suspension with electric brakes that's only a couple hundred more but definatly worth considering. I've used it twice now and find them to be very well built. He's up in New Hampshire not far from you if I remember correctly. Anyway, good luck with your build and maybe we'll see you out there camping one of these days.
