Patience pays off

Postby Lazybones » Sun Jan 15, 2006 2:24 pm

I just brought home a vehicle yesterday that I have been trying to get for 15-16 years. :D It has been sitting in a barn in the California mountain valley of Covelo. I used to have a portable lumber milling bussiness and did some milling for the owner and saw this in the barn. I asked the owner about it and he said he didn't want to sell. Every year or two I would ask about it and be told the same thing NOT FOR SALE. Then last week I asked again and was told if you want it come and get it. So off I went in the pouring rain an hour and a half up into the hills to retrieve my prize.

It is a Dodge Carryall WC-26 made April 13 1942 only 1499 of this particular model where made.

Today I plan to get it running and take it for a drive! :worship:

Kevin, I doubt I will bring it to Pamplin. I will probably bring the T-bird since the Fortuna car show will be going that same weekend. I thought it would be fun to do the druise pulling the teardrop withthe car.

The 52 Chevy wagon in the back ground was bought as a parts car for an other project. It is minus an engine and transmission. The problem is that it is too nice of a car to use for parts. A friend of mine gave me a 89 camero with a 305 that i plan to put in it this summer. So now I will have two Chevy wagons. I may sell one this summer as I don't have the space to keep them all.

The Packard project is on hold for the winter. All of the machine work is done on the motor; it sits waiting for me to assemble it.

How about you? I heard a rumor you may be getting a vintage car to pull your trailer. Is it true?

How come my picture didn't show up on my post?

Lee, I believe the Fortuna car show is the weekend before Pamplin.
I was looking at a 36 Plymouth 4 door, I'm not sure it's something I want to get involved in right now although I do need to make arrangements with the owner to go check it out when the weather improves. You did most everything right to get the photo posted except you used the wrong tag at the end, it should look like this "" with your url between the tags.

Does the name Marshall Lytle mean anything to you? He was a buddy of mine (an older buddy) from Worcester, who passed away a few years ago, recently living in Boca Raton,

He was well-known in the Packard restoration community, and he had two of them, winning a bunch of awards for that work.
Here we go again!

Ira, Sorry the name isn't one I've heard before. That doesn't mean anything though as Working on Packards is new to me. I have generally been a Chevy,Ford or Nash man.
I'm finding that Packard is almost a religion. The people who are into them have been driving and restoring them for most of there life. I am still on the low end of the learning curve.

Mike, Thanks for the cool picture!!

It gives me an idea of what mine looked like before the Electrolux paint job that's on it now. I can see part of the original lettering and numbers on the back where the paint is falling off. I think I will take some sand paper and try to get down to it.

I didn't realize how popular these things are. I did some searching on the internet today and like the Packard there is a large following.

Well, I got it running. (kind of) My friends and I played around half a day working to get this ting running. It poped a few times but still nothing. The six volt battery started to get low so I hooked up the battery charger. It has a jump start feature. After catching the charger on fire we towed it up and down the street. Finally it started (kind of) I had to keep it floored and it would just barely run.

Thinking it had a stuck valve we did a compression test. the middle two cylinders are week but still held pressure. I decided it must be a head gasket. So this afternoon I removed the head put on a new gasket. It runs better but still has pressure coming back out of the carb> :?
I'm Pretty good with motors but this one has got me scratching my head a bit harder than normal. :fb All I can thing of is timing. This motor doesn't have a vacume advance, never had a vehicle with out before.

So I'm hoping any of the other car guys out there may have some advice. :worship:

Thanks and have a great day!
