Red trailer and HF trailer question

Postby JeffSLC » Tue Nov 09, 2010 8:49 pm

Hello all-
I'm trying to decide which trailer i should purchase for my first teardrop build.
I have a couple questions about red trailer and harbor freight trailers.

I'm just wondering how these trailers are to tow with a teardrop on them.
Do they track well?
Do they bounce a lot?

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

People have been building on both for years. The tracking will be determined by your tongue weight. Your tongue weight will be based on two things: axle placement and load distribution. The amount of bounce is determined by two things also: weight, and tire pressure.

I have a HF trailer and I didnt move the axle; I load my chairs, ez-up, and duffel bag in front of the axle to provide more tongue weight. Many people move the axle back to provide a higher tongue weight, but this isnt necessary as long as youre aware of the situation, and load properly.

As far as bounce, I have a trailer rated at 1720 lbs. My loaded tear weighs only about 1000lbs. So the springs definitely provide much more support than necessary. I just run with a lower tire pressure. The manual says to run at something like 70psi.... I only run about 40-45psi. I've been down washboard dirt roads and see it bouncing a little, but never on paved surfaces.

Here is a good shot of the best improvment you can make on that frame.

"Down unders" shot stolen from his album.

15" to 18 " longer than stock is the general concensis but this one is 24" longer than the stock position.

I also extended mine for better towing manners and backing up is much improved as well.

Here is mine Image

I originally stole the idea from "Nobody" thanks Harvey

I camp with Tim all the time and here is his

While you are at it might as well put on a rear hitch

Makes a nice class two 1 1/4" receiver.

I did similar but made mine a class three 2" receiver.

These are great for bicycle racks or cargo platforms .
Growing older but not up !
