Roof top wind deflector.

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Another thing to consider, its not all "front wind resistance" that will affect the MPG or power to pull factor. Its also the flat back of the typical TT or RV that will create a pull suction as the wind passes around it, thus your "dragging" the air with you. Watch a wind tunnel demo video and you will see what I mean.

This is the beauty of the TD shape and design, round front and sloped off rear = the best design to tow!

Take a look at these.. we used them on some aircraft with very good results. They work the same with ground vehicles as well...

Here is some Volkswagen* wind tunnel data from a few decades ago:

So that's a reduction of 15% total drag by using the spoiler - huge. But this applies to this combination of European tow vehicle and relatively large, square trailer, so don't no-one go thinking all roof spoilers will give this benefit.

*Did you identify that car as a 1980s Passat by its profile?

This is the TTT and the tow vehicle. I don't feel the car struggles greatly to pull on the highway, it doesn't fly up mountains or goes from 45 to 65 quickly.
It is not an ideal tow package, rated at 1000 lbs.
I do find it nice to get behind traffic to draft.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I would love to see people's home made spoilers!

Peter
I have a X-cargo car top carrier from sears. It looks a lot like a wind deflector. Sears still sells this unit.
I'm going to give it a try this coming summer and see how it performs.
I know my canoe helped a lot when we had it on the tow vehicle. so I think this should do the trick when I leave my canoe at home. And it will pull double duty as storage. A win win.

I have a small trailer, but I tow with a V-6 Ranger. I think adding an airfoil would help. Your trailer is quite a bit taller than the TV so that flat front is going to add drag.

Cute trailer BTW

Slowcowboy, man you are killing me! Thank you for your great info, I really do appreciate your insight.

Enough already about the teardrop, I am building a teardrop but this Tiny Travel Trailer came up and I got it for $300. I want to use it.
This site is T's and TTT's, no?

Please let me hang here to get info. I love this web site.

Stay cool all,

Did you say, $300! I bet a lot of teardrop owners around here wouldn't mind a standy like yours for $300! Your TTT looks smaller than most, so it looks like you have the best of both styles.

For curiosity, what are the dimensions of your TTT.

Congrats on the $300 find, and Welcome to the addiction.

Peter,

For $300 I would have a TTT and our TD, if I were given that opportunity! And to top that off, I would attempt to tow the TTT of yours with our Ford Focus just for grins!! 8)

You are correct, it is T & TTT, stay around and ask the questions. Its refreshing to read and discuss other issues as they relate to our trailers and others.

Congrats on a super deal. Can't even buy a good frame for that.

I have a fiberglass egg/ pop-top. It's a TTT. I admire those with tears, but I have arthritis and crawling around is a no-no. I did a mock up and slept in it (outdoors) and mornings were horrible.

The best part of this site is the individual tastes and what we can share with each other. There are design features I have seen on tears that I will use on the interior refurb. Space is at a premium even with a tiny standie.

The best quote is the person who said . . . . .build what you want

The trailer is 6 1/2 feet wide, 10 feet long, with 6 feet of head room.
I have photos in my gallery.
I will do a total restoration inside and will keep every one posted when I start.

Now where's that airfoil when I need one!

Well Cliff, no way is it a Teardrop, giant or other wise. And reguardless of what one may say, it's also not an RV. Just try and tell Dave Locke that it's a Giant Teardrop.
P.S. If you want to get technical, all teardrops and tiny travel trailers are RV's. Think about it.

P.P.S. Did you guys get into Pismo? A lot of people didn't.

Gage,
You are blowin' my cover! I didn't want anyone to think I have an RV. Then they may want to talk me into building that teardrop (finally).

Yes I'm in for Pismo.
