my labor day week alarm clock. We camp about 100 ft off the tracks It goes off about 5:40 am.The gravel road goes to the workers campground where we camp in the teardrop! good times.Cant wait for next year.

Pretty darn cool! It even has the cow-catcher on it. You don't get to see those steam engines in action much anymore. The engineer did a pretty good job of playing the whistle, too. The smoke was so black coming out of the smoke stack that I would almost think that they were burning coal but it looks like maybe oil? Is that possible?

its a coal burner.. the teardrop isnt in the video but its right where the whistle blows the second time near the red buildings in the trees..I grew up about 8 miles from here. When the wind is from the south or still you can hear the whistles at my mom and dads.. Lots of steam power in rollag, lots of videos from there on youtube..

dittos!!!...thanks for posting that link....Kevin and I had a phone conversation about steam locomotives right after seeing this! I've chased the Challenger 4664 across Wyoming and in Colorado before, now I need to dig out the video I shot....people just gotta know this is the stuff that makes our history. remember I dont think theres any brakes on these machines and the bigger ones are 80 turns lock to lock on the steering wheel.

Most of those scale model steam engines are hand made. If you're really interested, the Los Angeles Live Steamers hold live steam meet every Memorial Day weekend. It's a pretty big deal, at least to steamers. It is held in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, CA, on Zoo Dr. Most of the engines and cars are scaled 1.6" to the foot but there are some 3/4" to the foot. You can catch rides on them as well as just stopping to look at them all. There are usually some scale model diesels (steamers call those 'dismals') there as well. They have a long, pretty nice track layout, complete with a tunnel. (There used to be a full-size train museum right next door to that. I think it's still there. It's been a while since I've been down to ol' So. Cal.) Look here:
