Jefferson State Tour Questionnaire

I'm attempting to formulate a teardrop tour and am trying to determine how large an area we could cover. So I would like to take a poll to see who would be interested in taking a tour in the mountains & deserts of Northern California and Southern Oregon, mostly in Jefferson State but some outside. This would take place sometime in August.

Questionnaire...

Would you be willing to:

*take a tour stretching from the Mt Shasta area to Central Oregon area?
*drive 100 miles (give or take) a day?
*drive (slowly) on gravel roads?
*camp "off the grid" sometimes?
*camp in remote areas?
*be gone for 1 week? 2 weeks?
*be subjected to cooler summer weather at high elevations?
*have showers available at campgrounds once every three days? (maybe 2 days)

Humm... Did this tour this past summer, Shasta to Ranier up 97, about 50% off grid, took 4 weeks and ended at IRG. Off to New Mexico and Colorado this summer, so won't be joining you all, but greatly enjoyed splitting our time between the Deschutes Nat'l Forest and places like Lava Beds. Enjoy the trip!

Yes! This is some of the most beautiful geography in the country!

*drive 100 miles (give or take) a day?

No problemo.

*drive (slowly) on gravel roads?

VERY SLOWLY... my rig is an asphalt setup.

*camp "off the grid" sometimes?

My campaign does not require shore power! (but at that point I need to run a [fairly quiet] Honda 1000 iu gennie for two hours every other day)

*camp in remote areas?

Far away from contemporary culture and it's offenses? YOU BETCHA!

*be gone for 1 week? 2 weeks?

It's vacation time!

Ahhhh! ...and all that fresh air, too.

I have perfected the wet cotton towel bath technique; I'm good to go!




I cannot commit my attendance at this time, however; my work schedule only fleshes itself out two or three months' in advance...

I had one thought about the gravel roads; but, I may be all wet. My thought was that people who have exceptionally nice tv's, td's and ttt's might not want to caravan on gravel roads, due to possible flying pebbles, etc....?

But after a 14-hour day I've come back to re-read some of the replies and I'm thinking if I really want to get away from it all like Ron is suggesting, I cannot be too concerned w/ dirt or gravel roads... 'cause the nicest places to be won't be accessible by pavement.

...and if I indeed wish to get away from "contemporary society and it's offenses" then why the heck would I inflict generator noise upon myself and others?





I do need to charge the trailer's 100 amp-hour battery, though, and I don't have a solar setup yet.

When this trailer's finished to the current plan then I need to think about building another rig that has some ground clearance, and tow it w/ something I can let get dirty and stay that way.

Looks to me like you have plenty of ground clearance for most gravel/graded 'at some point' roads: easy does it.

Your tarp looks as dust tight as my hatch (maybe more...), your car would look fine covered with camping dust...

I would stay out of the soft mud with that rig, but we went quite a few places in Oregon in June and the volcanic soil tends to be very firm save for the thin layer of muck on top when it rains (which can be slippery).

So get out there (and hook up a charge wire from the car to the trailer battery plus a small solar panel you can set out, then you won't need the generator and the gas can to fill it that just leaked and soaked everything in flammable liquid... )

Oh, and pack a tow strap just in case...

According to Kayperkay, Medicine Lake is currently scheduled for the first week in August; but I doubt anything is cast in cement yet.:
