Details....door/window construction pics?

Postby Woodstramp » Sun Nov 14, 2010 5:58 pm

I've looked through a lot of build journals here and have not seen any real detail pics of homemade door/window construction.

Seems to me (if you build your own doors and windows, instead of buying them) that that aspect of a build would be one of the most important (waterproofing mostly).

Anyone here have construction pics of doors and window that proved to be of good design after some field use? Thanks.

Have you looked at the 'Generic Benroy Plans' at the top of the page?

We did ours based on Steve Fredrick's shop manual.
http://www.campingclassics.com/shopman05.html
They were cut directly from the sidewall plywood, after epoxy on both sides was finished, then epoxied the edges HEAVILY, both on the door and the opening, then a inside seal/molding on the frame. Had a few hiccups, any wood door warps a little, plus we didn't trim the door down enough before applying the epoxy, so had to repeat the process, but seem to be working fine for us now, and we love the seamless, grain matched look.

I did look at that a long time ago. Only problem is my old computer chokes when Adobe PDF files are running. I'll take a look again. Thanks.

Nevada,

Must have posted right at the same time. That is simple and it looks good. I'm assuming that the rubber seal just presses against the back of interior trim piece you have.

My rig will have to sit out in the elements. No shed to store it yet. The outer skin will probably be aluminum, so metal trim will be needed.

Thanks for the pics. Nice work on your camper, BTW.

Yes, you are right, except that the wood trim piece is routed back a little bit where it comes to the door, I think it was about 1/4" or little less, to allow room for seal to compress. Thanks, we like it. Good luck with yours!

Hi Woodstramp, you might try doing a search in the Teardrop Construction section for Doors. There's some good info there.
