Happy Independence Day from Finland

Postby Classic Finn » Mon Dec 06, 2010 10:48 am

Happy Independence Day from Finland Everyone.

Today we celebrate the Independence of Finland. And at the same time honor our brave Good Ol Boys who fought to keep our small country free.

That spirit lives in our hearts this very day.

Also to our American Friends. It is also known throughout the world that Finland is the only country in the world that has ever paid back the United States loans given during that period and after.

We also had no help by foreign military. The Finns had a few volunteers from neighboring Sweden and Estonia. Other than that is was the determination of our own people to remain free. The other Baltic States werent as lucky as we were and are today.

Congratulations, Classic Finn! Do you celebrate with parades and fireworks, and services to honor your service personnel?
Lots of Finnish people in this part of Minnesota. Lots of saunas, too.
Hope you have a great day!
BTW I have 2 cd's of Varttina. Love 'em.

Thank You Minisota.
;) Jaaaa shure we celebrate with all of the above. Music, concerts, military parades and lighting of candles in our windows and cemeteries.

At present there are military parades and gatherings at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki.

Ohh and the Sauna is hot. Outside we have about a metre of snow at present as well. Just beautiful outside even though its dark.

If you like Värttinä you may enjoy this. ;)

Sounds like a wonderful celebration! You could have fireworks any time night or day!

Jaa shoor you bet, we only have about a foot (30cm...I checked my ruler. Don't know why US refuses to convert to metrics) of snow here.

Loved the video! Little different style than the music I have of theirs. I love the part where she's all dressed in white and shovelling manure.
I got distracted with the one's scarf. I own a fiber arts shop and kept trying to figure out how it was made...knitted & felted...crocheted and felted...silk fusion.

Here's one of my favourite songs of theirs:

My wife saw this post and started laughing. She's a serious fiberholic (6 knitting machines, a spinning wheel, and a 44 inch, 8-harness jack loom in the living room, because it won't fit in the fiber room - yes, fiber room) and said that she has the pattern for that scarf in one of her Handwoven magazines.

She says it's in the Nov/Dec 2006 issue, and the article is titled "The W(hole) Project - Nuno-Like Felting for Weavers."

Now that she knows that you're a fiber artist, you'll most likely hear from her via PM - she may even join the forum now... I think that I'm lucky that we're half a continent away from MN - dunno if my bank account could handle living any closer...

Finland has a history that few of us in the west are aware of, the success of the Fin's during WWII is particularly interesting.
The success of their changes to their education system was covered in the NEA magazine, what the US should be doing. Train teachers well, pay them well and get out of their way so they can teach well.

Belated happy Independence Day.

I suspect the comment above is an old one - Britain joined this club in 2006 by making the last payment on the $5bn ($60bn today) Anglo-American Loan made in 1946 by the US and Canada.
