Well, here's what I've come up with so far...

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Lee...STOP...that axle is available for MUCH less than that...my local welding supply house, who is also a RedNeck Trailer Parts distributor can get me a 2000# Dexter Torqflex for around 160 bucks and no shipping, so do some more shopping...RedNeck's home office and central distribution facility is in Springfield Mo it would be worth the drive to save a couple of hundred dollars...

Gage, I think you've got the right idea. Gonna re-do my plans for alunimum and see what kind of fabrication challenges I may have. I don't have any metal-working tools, but then, I guess there really isn't that much "metal-working" per se. Guess the biggest challenge would be cutting out the side doors, eh?

madjack, thanks for the tip. I suspect the local dealer (Croft Trailer Supply) saw me as a pigeon. :x I told them the trailer was for a hot rod, and I had one of my trailer wheels with me so we could measure back-spacing. My wheels are Center Line AutoDrags, $120 a piece. Kinda spendy for trailer wheels, but I want them to match the hot rod. 8)

Oh, I shoulda mentioned... I didn't commit on the order for the axle. When the dealer called with the quote, I told him I wanted to think about it over the weekend. Phew!

With the size your buildin' how about makin' the axle. 2'' or 2.5''tubing and trailer hubs or rear hubs off a front wheel drive. I was gonna build mine but got a deal on a 4' and lenghted it. With the weight of most of tears I've seen on the board, a home built axle would do. I priced axles at the local flea market for $110 any lenght. Around $200 is everything but the steel. Shop for bargains!!
