A buddy of mine sent me this pic taken of me with a 1909 Case single cyl. traction engine. It was our inaugural pic from the morning of 4th of July about 1976. We were lucky, didn't have to roll new flues, but did rebuild the water box, rear deck, replumb it, pour some bearings and do a blast and repaint on it. It passed boiler inspection with no problems.

The story was that this one came from an engineer/collecter that had worked on the Manhattan project...can't verify that though. I think it may be the real deal as after this was taken, we took pics to his widow and she showed us the shed with all the old cars he collected in it as well. Included a Rolls with golf spike marks in the running boards as well as a beautiful Olds ragtop.

Our run almost ended up in disaster as the key fell from the pinion on the steering chains, the gear dropped on the ground and we ran over it, mashing it into the ground, almost ran over my '69 Maverick. At the last minute we grabbed neutral. I kept telling Jim...."turn...turn...turn" I'm turning! Makes for a good story that Jim and I yuck over 35 years later. Yup...that's me in the background...see, I did have hair and was skinny!

Creasote soaked fence posts make for quick pressure. This family also has the Case thresher that the family owned back to the teens and it's operational as well. They also have a 1912 Avery 2 cyl. and a 23 Case as well. All reside in Boulder Co. Sorry...just my own reminisce. Doug

imagine living out of the back of your model T pulling your old camper following the threshing rig for work back in the day...

Paul....your link didn't show anything for me....however, steam powered stuff isn't anything to really clown around with. We were really fortunate to have some "old" hands help us through our semi-restoration, those cats ran them for real! For me...I'm just glad I got to get a chance to be part of it, and run it. Having a whole bunch of cast iron "huff-n-chuff" and roll, when you put the throttle to it was a real thrill.

It's cool to know that it's running today and that I can step onto the platform and operate it! Steam!....it's not just for rice!

I'll take that over knowing how to operate an I-pod, Blackberry or whatever....keeps me separated from the 12 year olds. Doug

That's cool Doug. The 5 yr old daughter was kind enough this summer to let me watch the steam powered sawmill at the county fair. Awesome to hear that thing hunker down and huff when they feed in a large log. We stayed well away as one did explode around here and kill someone a couple years ago. You just never know.

On a different note - my buddy's family has barns full of vintage equipment. Not much steam but all old stuff from the US and europe. My favorite is a complete and functioning Holt 60. 60 for sixty horsepower. Gas 4 cylinder I think. What a monster. Holt was the predecessor to Caterpillar. Cat borrowed this machine and took it on a nationwide tour for maybe the 100th anniversary. They have a picture of 3 or 4 of these side by side working huge fields in the Central Valley.

It's started by putting a large steel bar into a hole on the very large flywheel. He says it will buck every once in a while and throw the bar so far into the field that it can't be found. That machine scares me.

he link worked for me but you might want to try googling western minnesota steam threshers reunion.
Im with you, I would much prefer to have the old skills than the new most of the time. there is a steam school there to, if you dont know how to handle steam, they can teach you, its one of just a couple schools in the usa... you can se the monsters plowing, thrashing grain, running a sawmill or 2, getting a pull on the dyno or most anything they were used for back in the day. Theres even a couple vintage steam shovels, 2 trains, one full sized, one smaller. countless stationary engines, steam and gas, and a sea of old gas tractors of every flavor. its a 4 day event every labor day and if your going to see everything and actually take it in it will take that many...I should dig up some videos...
