Losing my garage

Postby 2bits » Fri Jan 07, 2011 11:13 pm

I am about to buy a house and it does not have a garage. My teardrop is a woody with no fiberglass, just helmsman spar urethane so I will not store it outside, no matter what anyone says. I was just going to rent a one car garage at a storage facility near my new place, but wondering if anyone else had any other suggestions. My new place is going to be at a mobile home park so space and ability will be limited on site. They have RV storage but it is outdoors. I was thinking I might be able to get a storage shed and as long as it looked like a regular shed which is allowed then that would work, just getting one the right size would be a trick, although I could build one too as long as I didn't sink any posts.

Ideas for external storage? I will pass on all tarp or covers.

Geodesic Dome Greenhouse. Teardrop storage in winter, extended gardening season in summer. Or same thing covered in hard shell... tear storage in winter and guest house in summer. :)

I've seen plans for building these out of electrical conduit and plastic for about half the price of 1 years worth of storage. Dual use rocks.

Edit: reread should look like a normal shed.... so same thing that looks more normal but same uses. Tear shed in winter, green house or sunroom in summer.

DANG, I was not hoping for much, but we certainly are an inventive crowd here and there you go! It is really funny because I was walking through the parking garage at work today and looked at some conduit and said to myself, that there are so many different uses for conduit! I am going to give that bad boy some thought! They might think I am "growing" something of the extra curricular variety though! LOL

PS: You posted the re-read edit as I was posting my reply, I like the other one too. Very nice suggestion! Thank you!

I'll just leave THIS! here. That will give you hours of reading and the calculator on that page should be a great starting point if you intend to move fwd. Lots of info linked from that page as well. I spent weeks pouring over photos and sites on these and still intend to put one together someday.

Another Edit: These folks covered theirs with marine shrink wrap. The stuff that they winterize boats with. I felt for the price, and UV protection, it would be what I would use to cover mine. The unfortunate part is that you don't get more than a couple of years out of the plastic and you have to recover. Can recover it quite a few times though for the price of other coverings.

And, there's also the cargo parachute method.

Similar to Wimperdink's idea... The New Yankee Workshop builds a green house with wood framing, and plastic corrugated sheets. If the install area will be a dirt floor, spikes are inserted in the corners to anchor it down. If you should need to move it to another location or different part of the yard, it could be broken down. I recorded the two part show, and I believe plans are available.

A commercial green house that size ain't cheap.

I suppose one of these would be out of the question.

I don't suppose a garage in a box is all that good an idea....

Thomas you have way too much invested in time and and creativity invested to not protect it well. PahaQue has covers and or can custom make one for you. The portable garage idea that you make yourself might work, or it might not. Or do both!

:? If money is a concern then get a carport. Mine has been under one for the last year.

12 feet wide should get you. I was surprised when mine fit under ours and very surprised when the wind didn't take it out. You can get a kit or have it done for you. They also come with sides. ;)

Bein in a "mobil home estste" an aluminum carport cover would be JUS the trick !Usually them driveways are NARROW and long and a 12 ft wide carport jus wouldn't work.

Ya can bring the side down as far as ya want..leave it up a bit fer more air flow or go all the way to the ground with the side. Both ends would be open..

A shed would hafta be 15 ft minimum..prolly not unuf room fer that..

Yes. You can add sides and enclose it also. There is one in our "suburbs" that has a shed built on the end. It looks nice. They have held up during our snow and wind storms. They are popular in this area and come in different sizes, roof shapes, and colors. I was going to get one for my firewood, but instead cleaned out an old existing shed and did some remodeling with my chainsaw.

Those metal jobbies could be made to look better by planting some vines or climbing roses around them. I vote for that solution.

How about a plywood box, 12ft long by 8ft wide by 6ft high. Either lift and prop the whole thing up at one end to take the trailer out, or make one end removable - using screws to close it would discourage anyone getting inside. Paint in colour of your choice. After 10 years, replace rotten box with new one.
