Jack, It's just a little 10W-40 cooking out of that old block. You'll be fine.

Simple fix: buy Lodge. Second-hand, if you have to. (estate sales!)

Ok, warning: Political Rant On --

Stay away from chicom crap, be it electronix, cast iron, or all that cool junk at Wally-World.

Rant Off.

If you buy second-hand American products, you're still better off than buying new junk from China.

I was told that putting cold water in a hot pan is what made the bottom bulge.
Also one way to season an iron skillet is rub salt in it, sand if you are tent camping, to get it clean, and then wipe with cloth or paper towel. If you have to get it wet, no soap, and dry over heat, and rub oil or spray in it.
RVing, and fixing them since 1968.

Just another question... I have a nice heavy duty aluminium pan where the non stick coating has been damaged and I want to use it for camping. Is ther a way to take the coating off and season the pan so that it won't stick? I know you can't do it the same way as a cast iron pan, you'd melt it. And yes , I know cast rules, but it seems a shame to throw this pan out. :SG

yes, there is.

Elbow grease and SOS pads.

OR, if you're really careful, a wire wheel and an electric drill.

Taking the coating off is the easy part... seasoning it so that it doesn't stick is the part I'm wondering about.

Herb used wire brushes on his drill. Extra fine sand paper might work. I always use pam before cooking in it.

Aluminum is not porous like CI so it wont "season" just use some PAM and a low heat....................... 8)

Madjack...you mention a 9N earlier in this thread...did it have a "Jerk-a-matic" tranny in it? Actually it was a Ford-o-matic but never shifted worth a damn...I hated it.. and for using the aluminum pan camping...it'll be ok on a stove, but on a fire, watch your heat, it'll warp...Doug

Doug, the old 9N had a 4speed stick, you put it in whatever gear you wanted while stopped...you couldn't shift it at all while moving and if you where bush hogging it would stop moving until the bush hog quit turning due to a live PTO...lotsa fun in the woods

Cast iron is a very poor conducter of heat and should be pre-heated over low or med. The larger the pan is the more important it is to use lower heat. A 22" monster should be pre-heated over very low heat or better yet in the oven.
One last thing. To avoid a warped pan try to pre-heat it as evenly as you can by moving it around on the burner.
I know its the photographer, and not the camera. I'll keep shooting with a Pentax. Just in case.
