White Gas for the Stove & Lanterns - Coleman or .......

Of course we all prefer the Coleman white gas to any other gas product to use in our stoves and lanterns, but has anyone used "Crown" white gas?

Walmart currently has Coleman white gas for $9.00 a gallon and one of my sporting good stores has "Crown" (never heard of it) white gas for about $6.00 a gallon. It specifically made for the gas camping equipment. Has anyoneused it?

I'm thinking htere should be no additives or anything else in this day and age..... !(?)

I've never used it but a lot of guys over on the Coleman forum use it if it's cheaper for them and claim it's interchangeable. Kinda of like Sunoco versus BP. I can't ever remember seeing it in store around here.

Didn't Walmart also have their own brand?...can't remember the name, but a green can with labeling same as their line of other camping stuff...I think it was cheaper too, but haven't seen it in a while. I can remember when some gas stations used to have white gas. Doug

"The Academy" is a new sports store in my area and they carrier the "Crown" right now.

I'm going to buy me a can tomorrow and check it out and see how it works out. I did find out however that this stuff (Crown) has all the "additives" taken out of it and is used for the production of methamphetamines...! If iit's good enough for meth, then it's good enough for our Colemans, right? .... I'm joking!

I tend to doubt that Colemen has a refinery, so for all I know, Coleman, Crown and all the others come from the same suppliers.

Naphtha is biproduct of normal oil refining. Most of it is used to make other petrochemicals used for plastics and solvents. Coleman fuel is just one product that comes from Naphtha.

Coleman, Crown and everyone else is probably buying it from the cheapest and/or closest supplier.

There shouldn't be any additives in any white gas.

I'm sure your right CD....nice to have the name recognition of Coleman if you're peddling fuel. People see Coleman, and get it cuz the stove/lantern says Coleman on it, I can't imagine that any brand of white gas is much different than any other in a gas pressure appliance. I could be wrong though. I've run the Walmart stuff as well as the Coleman and not had any problems. Doug

I don't know coleman appliances like you guys do, but my dad was obsessed with his work in the oil refining industry, so I learned more than I ever wanted to about that industry.

The average consumer would be amazed at what happens between the time a barrel of oil comes out of the ground, and the time they plunk down their money on a finished product.

Yup, 2-cycle mix will make a lot of smoke, and may foul your plugs. But, at least it won't toast your engine.

CD...At the time as a kid, white gas was still for sale at some stations as some people were still using it for a cooking fuel, although that was almost extinct at the time, mostly for the remote types and cabins. And as a sidebar....I'd not recommend running any mixed gas through a modern injected type system, a crappy 60's pickup though is OK! Doug

I love Academy! I've gone through several cans of their off-brand fuel. I just looked and indeed, the can I have now is Crown. It's about half the price of the Coleman stuff. I use it in my 425 and 200A with no issues. A few years ago I got a couple small red plastic Coleman fuel cans (maybe pint sized? (2 qts?)) I fill these from the big can, because they are easier to pour into the lantern and stove, and stow easier.

There are from what I can find two different types of "white gas" one that is gas with out additives and the other which is Naptha. According to the Coleman MSDS sheet it is 100% Naptha. The MSDS sheet from Crown says it is a "lite petroleum distillate" (so is Naptha). The Cas numbers however are the same so I would be willing to bet they are both Naptha and one does not have the Coleman name.

The only problem I've found with the off-brand fuel is that sometimes the cap on the container is difficult to screw on and off. I could have gotten a couple of containers that were just not up to specs, but it was annoying!
