Low maintence Paint/ Covering suggestions.

Postby lax71vcu » Tue Jan 18, 2011 4:20 pm

I want to build a canvas coated or sandwich walled Teardrop.

I need to know what paints would be the best most durable coverings to use and if they would work to adhere canvas to foam.

I am even considering bedliner if it would work. I want durable and low maintenance.

Please suggest away.

Rayvillian has a neat process using cloth and latex house paint to create a strong, durable and watertight coating. I think he has a tread about it. I'll try to find it.

And, I sent Gary a PM with a link to this thread, so maybe he can chime in.

I've been experimenting for awhile with cloth and paint and have had good luck over luan plywood. I use latex primer as a glue to put bed sheet on like wallpaper than follow with oil base paint to seal it in and waterproof it.

The process is paint or roll a thick coat of primer on the surface than apply the bed sheet working out the bubbles than roll a second coat of primer over the top. Let that dry than roll on another coat of primer and when that's dry add a couple coats of oil base of what ever color you want.

I've done a few small pieces on foam. the best was a loose weave felt applied with primer followed with bed sheet over the top. Looks alot like fiberglass and cures out pretty hard. It would need some oil base to seal it though. the covering started to separate when it got wet but when it dried it stuck back down fine.

Hope this helps
Gary
