My First Question (Windows)

First of all thanks for having me !

I am in the process of converting a 6X12 KingAmerician.

I am wanting to install a few windows in the sides of my trailer between the metal studs.

My problem is that between the outside aluminum and the inside wood there is an air space of about 1 1/4 inches.

I am not going to insulate the side walls so I really don't want to remove the inside wood if there is any way around it.

Anyone able to help me out with some advise?

You'll need some sort of spacer between the inner and outer walls to keep the window and trim ring from compressing the metal too much. You'll need to plane a 2 X 4 to the proper thickness or make up a sandwich of plywood to the proper thickness. You should be able to ease the spacers into the void between the inner and outer walls once you've cut out the area for the window. Put a couple of screws through the inner wall and into the spacer to hold it in the proper place while you're installing the window. Be careful not to let the spacer fall to the bottom of the void. The only windows I have installed were in a truck van.
I have taken trailer windows out and reseald with butyle tape.
I know you said you didn't want to remove the inside wooden panels
but it seems to me you should so you don't cut any supports if you want the windows installed between the support ribs.
Or if you are thinking of installing longer windows then a framwork needs to be built to replace the support ribs that will need to be removed.
so I would remove the wood.

I also would insulate trailers get very hot in summer and cold in winter a few pieces of blue-board works wonders.

My plan is to purchase windows that will fit between the vertical supports ribs. This way I will not need to cut any of the support ribs.

I have insulated the ceiling and we will only use this trailer in the nice months. I am hopping we will be able to get by without doing the walls.

I remembered reading the thread a couple of months ago but could not remember from who and when. It's bookmarked now. Just got my window in today. Was going to cut the outside before installing insulation and inside walls. Think I will try your way now.

I installed 2 windows today . Removed the plywood , insulated , reinstalled the plywood , cut the windows out. I found it REALLY helped to have my wife put pressure against the window from the outside at the point where I installed each screws from inside . I could not have been more pleased with the way they look when finished .
The windows I installed have a 1/2 inch wide rubber seal that must have been at least 3/16 inches thick. I ended up with very tight fitting windows that look look like they came from the factory already installed .

I am converting a Suretrac /Novae 7 x 14 . I already installed an RV style door . Plan to finish insulating and then build in 2 fold down bunks that will also make into a 6 ft 9 inch wide bed . Plan to use this to haul our atv and bear hunt out of this fall.
