HOLY FLAMMING AGM BATMAN!!!!!!!!!

Postby Wolffarmer » Fri Jan 28, 2011 7:01 pm

I got me a Sears JC HIggins 710.74001 made by AGM or one of it's successors, probably in the 1960s. When I got it, it would "hiss" a bit when pumped up and valve turned on. no gas would come out. Then it even stopped hissing. ( yes there was pressure :gas: ) So i tore it down today. Generator opened and the cleaning needle works. Pulled the fittings out of the font. Pulled the pickup tube off and pulled the needle valve out and freed it and the spring up. The needle fits in the jet and seems to move when the valve is turned.

Put it together and now it not only hisses it spits like the dickens. Light it up and there is way way to much gas no matter what I do with the on/off valve.

Anybody have a clue? I am getting above my pay grade.

The vent is in pretty good shape and font is not to bad. I hope I can make it a burner. If not, drill out the vent stud hole to fit it to a 242 and make people wonder.

;)

Randy, I'd look at the air tube and see if there are spider webs in the end/bottom of it. I'll bet you a beer there's something in there.

I don't belive it is that. Did kind of look for it before I put it all together. And the gas just comes a shooting out of the burner, and joints in the beastie.

Slowcowboy and I could almost use it for a weed burner.

you may have a worn out generator tip - it does happen. the tip cleaner wire acts like a smooth file after repeated use. The hole in the tip becomes enlarged and too much fuel is passes through

Second beer goes to me (or a Snapple Peach Iced Tea!).

Randy, I don't mean to bust yer chops r' nothin, but... "kind of" looking won't clean out that air tube.

One should definately verify that the airway is clear. Either shove a soft bit of something crimped onto the end of a coathanger, or blast a good shot of compressed air (no more than 80 psi!) through it; preferably both!

:) :) :)

Shooting out of the gennie is OK....joints not so good. Like mentioned...I'd check for any crap in the tubes. Maybe it just doesn't need to have much of a cracked valve to get the fuel to flow. Some of mine are kinda variable in terms of just how far I need to open it to get it to burn. Unless you have all new parts in one, chances are, it's kind of taken on a life of it's own through years of use. Doug

I barely crack the valve and it starts to look like a WWII weapon. I can use the cleaning leaver and it will shut the flow off up there, but I can't get a spot it will really burn. Kind of like the old flat track motorcycle racers. Off or WFO.

I have buffed the main valve needle on farm shop buffing media ( Levis pant leg ). no difference.

:worship:

When the shop warms up a bit. I will go out and warm it up a bit more. Shop is an uninsulated metal building. And ceiling is about 16 feet up there. Was made to run a Combine in.

Randy....maybe try less pressure to start, sort of like a Military. Just a few pumps to get-R-running and the gennie up to temp, then more pumps in it. Just an idea. Doug

I had my 200A last week that I was cleaning and lit her up at dusk and caught the whole thing and my (outside) table on fire. Fuel all over the place. Luckily I didn't put the good plastic knob back on so it didn't burn. That's a trick I'll continue to do - if you have any doubts put on an old knob before you fire them up!

Anyway, all I did was re-tear it all down and cleaned it a second time. I lit her up the second time and she just "purred" like a kitten...! Yes, Coleman lanterns can pur.
