A REALLLLL challenge...done!

Dave A gave me this one last week, he's a lantern guy. It originally belonged to Dean Bessom, (for you Dam gathering types) and was used by his father who was a paleontologist. It's a Pre-Way 512B 3 burner...working on the date of it now. I like the cast iron tops! Definitely not the backpacking type stove...weighs a ton in spite of all the rust!

I began to truly marvel at the cast iron grating in your first photo... thinking of how neat they are in the first place (unlike the thick-guage wire grates on the more popular, later-vintage camp stoves) and about how great (see what I did there?) they'll look when you're finished restoring this piece.

THEN I saw your second pic... and I LOL'd. WOW. What a stove!

The burners are also cast iron. we have one that predates his and it is in original as used condition and we used it on our last trip to Lake Superior.

Say! Do you have a pic or two of this stove of yours in yer Album? That'd be nice to see. (I just scored a Model 425 no-letter w/ a cylindrical, pale-gold tank. It's a beauty!)

It looks like it's all there - and that's a plus. Also some of the paint is flaking off, so stripping it down to metal should be a problem . Can't wait to see what you do with it

Doug you do a nice complete job on all the white gas restorations. Other than a little block sanding to take care of the pits I would think the process would be the same on all the stoves you have done. Can't wait to see the end product!

Mark...on the surface stuff, they are pretty much the same other than how they are crimped together on the lids/ wings etc...Some need really heavy primer and sanding, a bit of body work, spot putty etc...On this one...the lid can't be separated from the case, the hinges are spot welded on both pieces. I'll see if I can drive a pin, but it's not looking promising. It will be a challenge to paint well.

What I'm finding is that the operational stuff is different in a lot of them from the same manufacturer over the years. Coleman is head and shoulders above all of these for common interchangeable parts. Doug

So Coleman is the Chevrolet of the white gas world. Who do you think of as the Ford and Dodge? (Ford having the least interchangeability)
