Right you are, Miriam! My grandmother on my mother's side welded on ships at the Alameda Naval Shipyard during WW2, and my great aunt on my father's side was a WASP.
More recently, my wife is a retired Sergeant First Class (22 years Army) and we met when we were both helicopter mechanics at Ft.Campbell, KY.
She was on recruiting duty in So Cal in 1994, and wore her Class A (Dress) uniform as a matter of course for the job. When one potential female recruit (about 17 years old) asked what her normal job in the army was, she told her she was a helicopter mechanic. The girl looked puzzled for a second, looked over my wife's uniform, then asked, "How do you do that without messing up your skirt...?"
