Looking for...

Postby Jarred&Misty » Thu Feb 17, 2011 8:17 am

Ok guys I have faith in my fellow camping and coleman buddies that somebody can find me a clamshell coleman lantern case. For some reason I am on the hunt for one, growing up my father had a coleman lantern and one of those clamshell cases. Now i guess since I have a son and am very into camping I came to the conclusion that I needed a set up like that. I have been looking on ebay but only can find them with lanterns or they are expensive. If anyone can help please let me know. Thanks for your time.

You might want to post what lantern the case is for. :)

Unlike the two or three (possibly, dunno) sizes of the red-or-green-top/black-bottomed plastic, upper/lower piece cases, the yellow clamshell case was like a one-size-fits-all design. The inside of the yellow clamshell case has a variety of recesses made to accomodate a few, different-model Coleman lantern... or, at the very least, any modern-era(late-40s onward) 220/228 lantern.

For example, I have two of these cases in my collection; one came w/ the purchase of my wife's almost-birthday-lantern 228F* and the other has a Model 275 "Turd" in it. Same cases.

Sorry guys, I had thought that the clamshell fit most of them. The one i have is a 9/73 228H. Just got it not too long ago and still putting things together for it. Is it an ok one? or a "turd"?? lol thanks!!!

220-model lanterns and 228-model lanterns differ only in the diameter of the "hat" or, ventilator and and shape of the bale; otherwise the lanterns are identical... so when you see "228" it automatically means, "big hat". Love me some big hat lanterns! I have more than two of them. lol. Let me put it that way.

The Coleman yellow-plastic clamshell case will most definately accept any 228 lantern... and, as described (in a somewhat roundabout way) any Model 275 "Turd".

What kind of prices have you seen for just the clamshell cases on eBay? What do you consider to be expensive? I am unaware of when or if Coleman ceased production of these cases.

I have seen them on ebay for 50 bucks for just the case. Haven't been looking alot at the combo ones of the lanterns and the cases cuz i have the lantern and my better half has me on a "budget" for it. lol So with that in mind i was looking for something a lil less but don't know if I will find one for that. I was looking around on the coleman website and the only ones I seen on there are the ones that go over the top of the lantern not the clamshell. But thats all i found. Thanks

I also have been looking around for a clamshell case. The only one's that I have found have lanterns in then and they want way too much money for them. Doug and a few others have made custom boxs for their lanterns. Been meaning to try my hand at making one or two.

Hey Dawn, do you have any pictures of the boxes others have made. I'd like to give making some a try.

 They are posted somewhere in the vintage camping section here. I'm pretty sure that Doug made a few.

My clamshell case that I got a bargin on will not allow my Sears big hat to fit *sob*

I'm debating whether to keep it for my next acquistion, or to release it back into the wild.

Steve....here's what I've done, this one made for a 220. Used some leftover 1/4" mahogany ply from the boat. Didn't do the box joints on the others, not worth the effort. The bottom has a receiver ring of wood to accept the base and is padded with felt. Nickel plated corner caps and a handle on the lid. A small patch of foam can be added to the lid to squish down on the lantern a bit and keep it centered when closed up. Doug

too bad, the Sears has that larger diameter fount. If you decide to sell it, post it here, I'm sure someone would like to have it. But keeping it for a nice 228 that will fit sounds more fun.

Doug, that is the nicest wood lantern case I've ever seen

Here's one I did a few years back:

My only regret is that I made i out of plywood that was too thick and it's a bit heavy. If you can use thinner plywood for your project.
