I now have walls!

Tomorrow afternoon I take the trailer to the local DMV to get it titled, then I start bolting stuff onto the frame. Mostly I'll just be dry-fitting things together; I'm debating whether to CPES the walls before attaching them, but I definitely want to do the floor before I have the walls on. Plus I'm still waiting for my roof vent, which I'd like to have on hand when I lay out the roof spars.

Looking at the weather forecasts, though, it could be a couple days before I CPES anything. We're expecting rain tomorrow, and very cold temps all weekend. And stupid me bought the warm-weather formula!

Good luck with the project. I'm still in the planning stage of our build. Our car is also small for a tow vehicle, but sadly not one that I would go on an autocross with (Prius). It will be interesting to see what techniques you'll use to keep the weight down.

Well, I could have had this done a lot sooner if I hadn't been so lazy yesterday, but the walls are attached! At least until I get the remaining spars and the galley cabinets dryfitted, at which point it all comes back off to be glued.



I began this part of the project Friday evening. I had the left wall screwed on at the base and had begun drilling holes into the base for the right wall when I snapped off a drill bit in the third hole I drilled on that side. I went back into the house to grab my keys and wallet to drive to OSH for a replacement bit when I got a call from my wife inviting me to a friend's house for a visit and a few drinks.

Saturday I was busy most of the morning and afternoon and just didn't feel very motivated.

But here we are today! I plan to start laying out the galley in a little bit.

Nominally, they're 24" radius. I just belt-sanded them until they were smooth, so they might not be exactly that anymore.

Another update for today: I have the bulkheads and the main shelf in place!





There are a few gaps between the panels, but I'll worry about that later once I have everything permanently attached. I still have two more shelves to add in the galley and one more inside the cabin. What I have added so far helped a lot in tightening up the structure of the trailer; this thing should be pretty solid once I glue it.

So I took the trailer for a little drive yesterday... had to buy something that wouldn't fit in the car.


And what I bought was tile board to cover the floor. It's shown here just lying in place; I haven't glued it yet but will do so before I put the cabinets back in.


Finally, I have all the pieces for the bulkheads and shelves done. Tomorrow, when the glue has all dried, I will put them back in permanently.


I still need an upper "shelf" in the galley. I'd like to make a cupboard with sliding doors back there, so my plan is to buy some 1x10 or 1x12 "utility shelving" (basically a pine board), rip it to the same width as the lower shelf, and then cut slots into one side to accomodate the doors.

Comment: I went with the least expensive 1/2" ply I could find at Lowe's, and everywhere I countersink a screw hole near the edge it delaminates. Now I know why it was only about $13 a sheet...

I bet that was a good feeling to see your TD under tow. You're making incredible progress and will be camping in no time.

Things are moving along nicely. Are you using the 1/2" ply for the bulkheads and shelves? The walls I presume are 3/4". What do you plan to ski the outside with?

The walls are also 1/2" ply; the difference between that and 3/4" for the walls is close to 50 pounds. The roof will be 1/8" ply and I plan to just paint the exterior after sealing it with CPES.

I am using 3/4" ply to make the hatch ribs, however. I'm planning to use four vertical ribs with the two outer ribs doubled.

Yes, it was. It towed quite nicely, although I didn't take it very far or very fast; mostly I knew it was there because it COMPLETELY FILLED my rearview mirror!

I'm feeling pretty confident I'll have it camp-worthy by my deadline, even with me losing four days next week due to being out of town.
