My wife found this 12" camp oven. It looks like it's been outside full of water for quite awhile. I will see what electrolysis can do. The outside is not to bad. The inside is horrible.







I will post results after I try cleaning it up.

It can be saved. Don't give up on it over a bit of rust. If it doesn't have holes or cracks in it, you can still cook in it after the rust is cleaned up and it gets re-seasoned. If the pits are too deep it can be the designated baking oven via the use of bread pans or parchment paper.

I found an old dog like that. I wire brushed it all out, seasoned it and now only use it for Baking Potatoes at Pot luck dinners......I always use tin foil when I use it.

But it is usable.

Yea, I never thought of using that way guys. I do have a good Lodge 12" so turing this one into a bread oven or side dish oven makes good sense.

Not being a CI fan but knowing steel (it is not pure fe or it would not rust) why could you not power sand it to remove pits?

I will try power sanding after I use the electrolysis. It is pretty bad. But once I get the main rust off I will be able to see what the surface is really like.

Hey I found one a few weeks ago that I have not had time to do anything with. I didn't realize it when I bought it but I think its a spider. I found it at an antique store and had to call the owner to get them to sell it to me. I probably should not have bought it but I felt like I had to save it. I would like to do electrolysis but it may be a while before I get around to it. It's about 10" across. I don't have a lid for it yet and wasn't sure what I would do with it but yall gave some good ideas.

That is not one I have seen before. It has no bale and only 1 tab that sort of looks like a pour. Mine is in the Electrolysis right now. So soon enough I will know if the pits will come out. Good luck with yours!

When I bought it I thought the same as you. But now I believe it is a spidder that the handle has broken off of. It also has a gate mark.

You're right, that is a spider with a broken handle. You might try a lodge camp oven lid of a similar size on it. If you find one that fits, Lodge sells lids seperately. Not sure what you would use for a bale..

I did try a Lodge 10" but it seems a little to big. I have a 12" spidder that I use a heavy coat hanger to help with lifting. it seems to work well.

Ok....I did 2 rounds of Electrolysis. Let is sit full of vinegar for 24 hours. Then I sanded with 80 grit on an orbital sander. Then I hit it with a grinder and back to the 80 grit. This was very pitted. Two rounds of seasoning and this is how it came out. It is still pitted but the seasoning seems to have taken well. But in the future I will stay away from any cast iron this bad.

Looks good. It always feels good to save a piece and bring it back to life.
The lid looks like new. How well does it fit the bottom? Is it tight? I have spent alot of time on mine but not finished yet. Still a ways to go. It's amazing how much work some of these can take.

Thanks, it was a lot of work. The lid does sit flat but there is a little side to side movement. But it got me going on a bunch of pieces I have. There are 3 waffle irons going in the oven tomarrow and a dutch oven in the electrolysis. Once I see a little progress it sparks me to keep going.
