I found this on Saturday. I've never seen one before but thought it was interesting. The directions are the best. It says keep your face away when you throw in the match. NO KIDDING! Plus you can even cook on it.

Hey Dawn do you think I can just use Coleman fuel? It says Naptha or Shellac thinner. I promise to keep my face away when I throw the match.

Whoaaaaaaaaaaa dude! It says to use alcohol (that's what you thin shelac with). DO NOT USE COLEMAN FUEL (naptha) as it is considerably more volitile than alcohol!!!! I see nothing in the picture suggesting that you can use naptha!!!!!!! I'm not certain of the outcome would be if you use naptha/white gas/coleman fuel but I'd be willing to bet it might get overly exciting in a negative kind of way!!!!

As Richard Pryor said: "Fire is a great motivator! You can run real fast when you on fire!"

Not sure what to use. Isn't Coleman fuel Naptha? Never heard of shellac thinner.

Shellac thinner:

http://www.recochem.com/us/index.php/pr ... ac_thinner

Note it says that it is "solvent alcohol". Since it is "denatured" one can assume that it's ethanol with an additive (usually methanol) to make it undrinkable.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denatured_alcohol

Here's another site that sells "shellac thinner" "stove alcohol".

http://www.starboardsupply.com/product_ ... id/3008306

Ethanol is a two carbon molecule similar to a straight hydrocarbon with an OH (oxygen-hydrogen) replacing the hydrogen of a simple two carbon hydrocarbon.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol

Naptha is a generalized term for hydrocarbons with from 5-12 carbon atoms.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethanol

Given the much higher number of carbon-carbon and carbon-hydrogen bonds to be broken during combustion, naptha has a lot more energy in it than alcohol.

Do not burn Coleman fuel, naptha, or anything other than alcohol in that thing unless you want the possiblity of some real excitement.

Cheers,

Gus

Thanks Gus, I don't know why I wrote Naptha I read Denatured Alcohol on the directions. I'll clean it up a little and check out the condition of everything before I try and light it, With Alcohol! ( not the drinking kind) I don't want to get a Darwin award.

Actually the alcohol you want to burn is the "drinking kind" (ethanol). Problem is you need pure 200 proof and I'm not sure that it's available and if it is it's heavily taxed. What you can buy is pure ethanol (a two carbon alcohol) that has been "denatured" as in POISONED with methanol (a single carbon alcohol) or other substance to make it undrinkable so that you don't have to pay the "drinking tax" on it. Contrary to popular belief, filtering denatured alcohol through bread or any other material will not make it safe to drink. I think a few folks have figured out, the hard way, that you can't just filter out the poisons in denatured alcohol.

Have fun but stand back!

Cheers,

Gus

Well I lit it and I'm still here to talk about it. They sold a denatured alcohol by Sunnyside at the hardware store. It even said for stoves and RV stoves on the front of the can . It lit right up and burns with a nice blue flame.
