Registering build in Ohio

Postby pat g » Mon Mar 07, 2011 4:21 pm

Anyone on here dealt with registering their build in Ohio? Ohio BMV web site makes a distinction between non com trailer and travel trailer with the travel trailer requiring a title. My TT is 5.5 X 9.5 feet. I know there are lots of builders in Ohio on here. Thanks for any advice.

Hi Pat
I am not real sure, but mine is store bought and they got confused when I when to get plates. I just had a basic bill of sale, no real title. But as long as it does not have inside water, sink, heat ect. it is titled as a utlity trailer more or less. I think you also need the weight of it.
Don't forget to get insurance too.

Thanks for the reply guys that was the way I thought it should go. I'm not putting in a sink or much luxury. I'll have to get it weighed somewhere but the BMV should be able to tell me where to do that.

BTW I am making progress. I've been looking up the mechanical/electrical stuff and shopping for the best prices on brakes, lights, and basic trailer wiring. I want to have it all registered and road worthy by mid April for my first kayak trip for which I am the organizer.

Pat
If you go up to one of the gravel places up town they will do it for you when you get ready. I weighed my truck at the one by the E-check place. Wanted to know the weight to put heavier springs on it. I have the truck full of tools, so when we hook to the tear and put all the junk we take in, it gets pretty heavy. Saves me from taking the tools out all the time. Not to good for the gas milage though.

When we bought our HF red trailer, it came with a Manufacturer's Statement of Origin (MSO). Wife took the MSO to the deputy registrar (county office) and got the tags before we even started assembling it. Since the MSO had the manufacturer's weight rating on it, they took that in lieu of a weight slip and just issued the tags. They expressed no interest in what we intended to build on it.

This was in Montgomery county OH.

Hello Pat,

I had a bill of sale for a home made trailer(frame). I took it to the weigh station and then registered it. Just says "home built" on the registration.
No inspection whatever.

Anything under 3,000 lbs would get you noncommercial plates.

My Scotty and teardrop are sold and being picked up over the next few weeks by the new owners. Not sure I told you but I'm onto my next project:

Hope to see you some time this year on the river!!!!!!!!!!!!!

take care,

I have owned several trailers over the years including boat trailers, utility trailers never any TD trailers.

In order to get tags I used a bill-of-sale and weight slip

weight slip was gotten at local land-mark feed store, other places that could have been used are junk yard, gravel pit there are several you just have to look.

I weight trailers empty before it had anything built on them in my case floor boards.

tow's insurance covers you if trailer would come loose and hit someone or something but doesn't cover cost to replace trailer for that you need seperate insurance.

Thanks for the info everyone. I just want to be sure that all is done properly because tickets suck. The ticket for not registering your kayak was about $80 ten years ago. After I get all my lights and brakes done, I'll call the stone place and ask them to weigh the trailer. Then I'll know the real weight of the thing complete but not loaded with gear. I made a simple rear bumper last night with some 4x4 stand offs from the frame to a light aluminum channel.

Barb, I may not even have built had I known that you were selling! LOL Give me a call if you want to paddle local sometime. The Rocky River will probably run tomorrow.

FYI Ohio TD Weigh

Postby pat g » Wed Apr 06, 2011 10:45 am

Took my trailer to Osborne Stone in Medina, Ohio. They are a big company with aggregate yards all over. They weighed my trailer for $15. The weight came in at 1300# A bit heavy, but it is almost 6Wx10Lx5.5H. Funny because as I built, I estimated and came in right about there. I kept track of weights of materials as I added them.

I am planning the next build as a light weight semi-tear with a curved (side to side) front. That one I will make a build thread and document from start to finish. Just have to agree on a price for my brother-in-law's 5x8 trailer that has been sitting in my yard for the last 5 years!
