Insurance

Postby Deryk the Pirate » Mon Mar 21, 2011 11:04 am

I just made a call to Geico my car insurance carrier to ask about what is needed to tow my trailer for insurance reasons. I was told my liability covers it if there is an accident but to cover the trailer valued at $2000.00 with a $50 deductible would be $27 for 6 months.

Im guessing its worth it, god forbid some idiot crashes into it and it gets totalled... or if I get cutoff and something happens.

Who has their trailer insured?

I do.

Too risky not to...

We're insured too.

For $50 or so bucks a year, we know that we'll get something back for our efforts if it gets wrecked.

My first TD was valued by the DMV for $13,000, so that is what the insurance company used and it cost me $200 a year. If someone steals it I could build 3 new ones.

My last TT insurance company said it was worth $18,000 and up'ed my cost I only paid $6000 for the trailer so I dropped the insurance from them and went with a more resonable dealer.

insurance is needed if you mess up and want something to rebuild with.

I have bet the insurance co my house won't burn down been betting them for 37 years they are right so far but if it ever did I could rebuild.

Just so there is no confusion.....liability insurance that carries over from your tow vehicle only covers your trailer if YOU hit someone or something and are at fault and either damage your trailer or other property. If your trailer gets hit by someone else.....and you do not have a separate policy on it, you will have to go after their insurance to cover the damage. Same thing if it's stolen, acts of god etc.......you're outta luck, unless it has it's own policy. We've had this discussion in the past and there was some confusion on what liability insurance covered. Doug

Exactly.

My $80 every 6 months is for peace of mind. It's case my tear gets stolen, catches on fire (distinct possibility in the South Central region) or decides to go straight when I take a turn in the TV.
Yes, I could (and would) "build another one" but I spent a lot of money building the first one and the payout would help with the replacement. I don't consider it a "fancy frill". To each his (or her) own I guess...

Yeah thats why Im thinin of insureing it... just in case something happens to it they will give me some money back to rebuild it. Thefts of trailers are not uncommon and Im in a fairly urban area. Peace of mind. They asked me what it was worth and I guessed at 2k, maybe should do it as 3k lol since Im in it for about a $1000.00 so far.

Insurance companies

Postby GeoDrop » Wed Apr 20, 2011 7:59 am

What insurance companies is everyone insured with? I called AAA, who insures our cars and they won't cover the camper unless it has a VIN number. In KS, we don't have to tag/title a trailer unless it is over 2,000lbs. So I can't get it insured through them.

I may shop around and switch insurance companies if we can get the teardrop covered.

I never understood why people tailgate a trailer?? I was helping a friend move 300 miles a couple years ago and did nothing but complain about it the first hundred miles or so. We stopped for gas and lunch, and like magic nobody tailgated the rest of the trip.

Turns out my "buddy" had made a sign and taped it to the trailer. It read:

Uninsured driver, 1 chain broken and wrong size hitch...please don't tailgate!

Ps...I am very much insured for the trailer and contents. Mayhem is everywhere.
Even those souls that are found must occasionally become lost to appreciate what they have.
