I would like to learn to flyfish, not sure about the gear I need(whats the best brand) or bout the flies. I have a telescoping pole that I cary in my pack and use for creek fishing, but I've always wanted to try a fly pole.

when water fishin I use shimano bait cast and spinning reels. When dirt fishin I use the whites DFX with headphones and several search coils.

I grew up fishing and don't intend to stop. Now I have my 6 year old grandson to break in. The whole thing is it does not matter if you are catching, just fishing. Cause there is nothing better than being in the mountains watching the day go by! My recipe 1 cast iron skillet, fish (trout, any kind brookies, rainbow, brown's)
flour, salt & pepper, crisco shortning (yup!) campfire or camp stove. Salt & pepper the flour in a large zipper bag. Dump in fish and shake gently to cover fish. Shake off excess flour mixture and fry till golden brown.
Cant beet it!
Got my special spots in the eastern Sierra picked out for this summer with the tear (if I finish it)

Anyone remember fishing with a bamboo pole? If you were really wealthy you had a two piece one! We used to go to the Forest Preserves in the Chicago area to catch catfish on dough balls we cooked up ourselves. Our poles were tied to the top tube of our bicycles like a long spear. We'd drive a stake and tie the pole to it. We'd hide back in the bushes so the fish couldn't see us and wait for the pole to head for the slough.
On a whim, I recently called a bait shop and asked if they had any bamboo ploes for sale.
There was a long pause and the owner said, "Boy, its been a long time since I even thought about that!"
Later after getting more money we got "real" two piece poles with reels. To insure easy removal of the pole pieces we'd rub the plug on the side of our noses to get oil on it.

Oh, wow, yes! That's what we used growing up. (And ours were two-piece bamboo poles. My dad would line us up -put the hooks and bait on and say, "ok, fish!"- I wonder what ever happened to those poles......... .

Yea, I remember the bamboo pole from my youth fishing in local farm ponds growing up near the Kansas City area.

Now I seem to excel at catching rock fish!!

Bamboo works better in streams...And so do Willows. I cut a Willow and got a straight pin from my friends mom and off we went. Bless her mom she cooked that lil fish for us. She was a great lady! Been fishing ever since!

Talked to my brother yesterday he has 9 great grandkids 4 of them stay with them a lot
he has a neighbors pond he uses
the kids ages 10 to 5 all love for him to take them fishing small one caught a small bluegill and you would have thought he had caught moby-dick
one proud kid.
