Not so tall Cargo Trailers ...

Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Postby pete42 » Wed Mar 23, 2011 7:51 pm

I have owned several TT's talk about sticking up into the wind 50 55 mph they do ok anything above that and the drag really can be felt and mpg goes down.

yes CT do look huge when compared to a TD or TTT I say to each his own it's your money your choice build what you want and like.

after today and my try at building something wooden I may never build anything again story to long to go into here.

garage friendly cargo trailer

Postby csgmtu » Wed Mar 23, 2011 10:11 pm

Reading the latest post about shorter cargo trailers. Has anyone found a larger, say 6 by 10 that has an overall height less than 83' or so. This would enable one to fit in a standard garage which has a great advantage.

I'm almost sure they can make one any size you want ... I really like the idea about being able to put it in the garage ... in the off season , I could use it as a little office , or storage ...
Plus it's still big enough to haul the Band equipment around...or use as a place to stay on those "road gigs " outta' town ...

Yes a "less tall" cargo trailer, sounds pretty useful if you're looking for a "hardsided tent". I personal like to spend my time outdoors when camping, so my trailer is only for storage and a nice comfortable, dry place to sleep. Could easily do a slide in interior so it could be a multi-purpose trailer.

If I were going for a bigger trailer where I could have space for a table and such, a shortl cargo trailer with one of those popup roofs like a Wells MPT might be the ticket.

On my way to the Grocery today , I noticed my neighbor got a new 5X8 CT ,the shorter version ... he had his pickup truck parked next to it and they were the same height ...Nice !!! Later I noticed several standard size CTs and they were taller than their tow vehicles , by about a foot ... :o The shorter one not only was more aerodynamic , but looked more in proportion to the vehicle ... The taller ones looked , for a better description , Top Heavy ... :o

Schaney , as far as real camping , I'm with you ... Dry comfy place to sleep , or huddle when it's raining , a place to just "get away from it all " ... Now that I have a larger TT , I realize that's NOT what I want to go camping in ... too big , to much trying to be a Home , which it's not , waay too crazy expensive repairs and maintenance ... Small CT, I can park anywhere and really enjoy the outdoors ... and haul stuff too ...

TCSV

Postby sjordanjeff » Sat Mar 26, 2011 12:11 am

TCSV= Tent Camping Support Vehicle. 5x8. I had to keep it small as towing behind my 4 cyl midsize car and it has to park in my garage with std. 7 ft door. Can sleep in it in a bind. Has the creature comforts we want while camping/fishing. Refer/freezer, Toaster Oven, Generator, 110/12V power via Inverter and on board batt. 1 man pontoon boat. All fits inside dry and secure and you can still sit inside and be comfortable when fully loaded. These small short CT's are ideal for what our circumstances would allow. Tows great behind my car. Check my album for pic's. They aren't great but you will see how I did it. And, it's still a work in progress..

Jeff

is that the pontoon boat folded up in one of the pictures?

we need a section for the "most stuff in the least space" you would be in top three.

what makes this site so great one can take a basic idea modify it to fit what ever one needs,

unlike a trailer manufacture who has to try and build something that suits everyone and ends up not suiting most.

gud job on build.

A 2900lb GVW and brakes aren't even a listed option? Not for me, thanks...

Mike , gosh , that guy's really got it together !!! :o Thanks for the info ... I'll be reading for days ... 8)
You know Mike , as much as I really Love the Beauty of a Teardrop trailer, these Cargo Trailers are just so darn Practical !!! Not pretty at all !!! Just a box eh !!! But they "live" outside in most any weather ...year after year ... a good wash now and then and repack the wheel bearings often, that's about it ... pretty simple , especially for an old "codger" like me ...

Funny, that "are you preparing thread"... Reminds me of when my wife's aunt and uncle went to Ireland ... (in their 80's) They had to cross a choppy bay in a small boat to get to the place they were staying .. Uncle looked at the old man in the boat and asked for a life vest ... The old man looked at him and replied ... "Not to worry , you've lived the best part of your life already anyway !!! " ...

Pontoon Boat

Postby sjordanjeff » Sat Mar 26, 2011 6:03 pm

Pete 42,

In my haste to post the previous pictures, I had left a couple of items out. I just added pic's of how the pontoon boat goes in. These are poly pontoons and are a bit bulky but never loose air and the boat goes together quick. I also have a Cabela's Kitchen, and a stainless grill I got at Sam's. I'll stow the Blender and Coleman Lantern behind the toaster oven. Plastic boxes will hold the Food and Misc. Wife is making cushions. I'm about done...
Thanks to all that commented on my post. Best Regards, Jeff

Passing by the U Haul place yesterday , I couldn't help but notice a 6 X 12 out there ... So I had to stop and check it out ( the wife thinks I'm OBSESSED now ! :o ) ... 5'6" tall inside ... Plenty of room inside , but the trailer seemed overbuilt and Heavy .. (Guess they do that to survive all the rentals ) ... Still it had a 2000lb cargo weight (tandem axles) ... Pretty good ...and it was almost exactly the height of my Pickup truck ... I saw a lot of other CTs and they all looked too tall ...sticking up waaay above the TVs ... and another curious thing , Noticed a lot of them were riding nose high... Probably a hitch problem , just looked very odd... Lots of them like that too .. Strange !!!

The more I look at the shorter CTs the better I like them ...

One thing I noticed about U Hauls is that they are lower to the ground, using dropped axles I assume. That would be a plus unless doing some serious off roading. I have my tv and ct set so that the ct is slightly nose down when loaded and hooked up to the tv.
Also, depending on how heavy you build, tandem axles on a 6x12 might be more than is needed costing a penalty in MPG.
One thing I learned in my project is just how many variables one has to consider in doing one of these projects. Be nice if some genius figures out an automated spread sheet that asks all the questions and makes recommendations based on the input for your project. When you've firmed up your criteria, the sheet would give you the order for your build. Dream on...... Jeff
