I think Steve wants pics of the artsy part ... Lots of potential there even with simple designs... Your imagination is the only limit ...

Another super low cost frame idea

Postby Blotto Bros » Thu Mar 24, 2011 8:04 pm

While thinking about this thread today it seems to me the main goals here are: Easy, low cost and light weight building options.

I have a bunch of 3/4" schedule 40 PVC in my garage and realised that it would make a fairly rigid frame for the walls of a teardrop.(in place of wood)..could also work well for joining the spars to the walls and possibly door and window frames.

This idea would also fall into the "no rot or rust" column. Just a thought.

Yep, that's it !!!
But I don't know if sch. 40 is strong enough .... maybe ??? Sch 80 may be better ... but you don't have that , so there goes the budget ... :o

Eagle , you may consider a couple quick sketches before you paint ... that always helps me sort things out before I touch a brush ... ;)

we did the shell building out in the ponies run-in. we put them out in the back pasture.

so my shell is now right outside my back door. poor thing just sitting there covered in tarp. but on the plus side, "IT IS" sitting there. it has not blown away yet. everything else has blown over to the neighbors. but the tear is still here.

i am having a couple of tearjerker gals come down the 1st weekend of april to finish the doors and canvas it. so far [always subject to chance] the weather is looking ok for that saturday. so we might have to move it back to the run-in.

that weekends plans are doors, canvas, and latches. at that point it should be campable. everything else will happen as time and money and weather allows.

i know i am a bit paranoid, i am thinking of getting some long straps to go over the top of the tear for traveling, holding it onto the frame. i am sure it is not necessary, but i might do it anyway.

should i fill that in? or will just the canvas do fine?

I was wondering what you were going to do with the kerfing slots ... but fabric "should" bridge it OK ... Might be a pain filling them in with lightweight spackle ...

If the floor is bolted down and you've put the reinforcing strips down the sides/edges ,inside and out you should have no problems @ <150mph ;)

I kerfed the curved framing on my Td and put PL expanding glue on before clamping it in place. I don't advise this glue because I could still smell it months later.. You might put some limited expansion/or no expansion foam in it to "glue" it together...If you can get to it

Auntie , thinking the best alternative to the PU glue would be Epoxy glue ...that has a little smell but quickly goes away ... Most of the solvent based glues will melt the foam ... :o
Unfortunately , the T2 won't dry on the foam (no way to evaporate) .. that would be nice if it did ... There'a always Hot glue , but it's tricky to use on such big surfaces... but it might be good for "spot welding" the foam , while the glue dries (or expands) ...

Perhaps the covering over the foam would seal the smell out (or in) ...???

well it was easy to do it in photoshop elements, but i am not sure about real life paint!

but i am thinking about something on this line.

but if i kept it rough, it would not have to be perfect.
