A Coleman Collectors Find of a Lifetime !

Postby PresTx82 » Sun Feb 06, 2011 12:58 pm

Some of you who visit the Coleman Collector's Forum may have seen this already, but I found an old lantern at an antique shop a few days ago and purchased it without knowing what it was.

I started to dismantle and clean it up and dicovered it was a 1939 or 1940 Colemax (Coleman). I started cleaning some of the parts and found this:

When I saw the sunshine logo I couldn't believe it. What a sight it was.

We found a referrence to it on Terry Marsh's website at:

http://terrence.marsh.faculty.noctrl.ed ... t4660.html

It's at the bottom of the page and two lanterns up from the Infrared Lantern.

I'm still in shock! I'll post pics when I get it all cleaned up and BURNING!

Congratulations on a stunningly rare find in the wild! Would like to see pictures of your rebuild as it progresses too.

That'll be a good one to fix up. I hope you will be able to get it up and running. Looks like someone beat the $hit out of the generator.......... the float must have been sticking (mechanic joke).....

I've posted some updated pictures of the Col-Max lantern below. I was able to remove the patina/rust with some fine sandpaper. I did find out I needed an internal part that was missing. I'll be ordering that along with some rebuild parts from Britlyt.

The lantern came with a little red vent which I thought didn't go with this lantern, but according to other pictures I've seen it does. I don't like the look but that's the way they meant them to look. The pictures below has the lantern cleaned up but I haven't polished it yet. I'm going to order the parts and get it running first. Once it's operational I'll tear her back down and buff her up.

Does anyone know how to pull the check valve on this lantern?

I made my own check valve tool as it wouldn't hold pressure. I needed a new gasket.

Image

I just received my gasket today but haven't fired her up yet.

Alrighty then, I have the Col-Max all shined up.

Image

Used some "Mother's Mag and Chrome Polish"

Image

Can you believe it's the same lantern pictured at the beginning of this thread?

All that's left is to fire her up............................ pics coming soon!

Mark, you've really done that Col-Max proud. All your hard work shows, an amazing transformation. I look forward to seeing the light shine from it again
