I want it all...almost

Postby StandUpGuy » Wed Mar 30, 2011 7:37 pm

I have a theory. That you you can build a lightwieght stand upable TT on a Harbor Freight 4'x8' trailer, with an inside galley, a shower and a toilet behind a door and that sleeps two adults. All that and it fits into the average garage. I have been working on plans for weeks and then I happen on this website and see something very much like what I worked up, already in the design library here. Spontanious generation.

I believe the Puffin has all that and is less than 1000 pounds. there are others around here that come pretty close!

true. I guess I have a different criteria of what constitutes "everything". For one, I would always use the trailer at a place with an electrical and water hook up. This would eliminate the need for a water tank a propane tank and a 12 volt system with a battery. These are heavy things I can leave out.

If I am always hooking up to a water supply then I would not need a means of pressurizing water. More weight savings.

I came across a very small fiberglass trailer today with tiny kitchen and a few different layouts for dining and sleeping.
The brand is Weis Craft (http://www.weiscrafttrailers.com) and their standie trailer models are the Little Joe and the Little Joe Ponderosa. Both models had the same tiny 5' x 9' footprint, with an internal height of 6'. The Ponderosa is a bit fancier, with toilet/shower options.

They also have a Roughneck model, which is a half-height (!) Little Joe and somewhat tear-dropish, but really more like a little den that you crawl into after you've been boating, hiking, climbing, canyoneering, biking or what have you.

I think these are manufactured (or at least sold) in the Denver area.
It is always interesting to look at small space solutions. I was surprised that I had never heard of them.

I just searched for the "Little Joe" trailer:

http://www.weiscrafttrailers.com/littlejoe.html

I love it! 'cept it does not have the shower/toiler. I think it is possible to work it in.

StandUpGuy, try this: http://www.weiscrafttrailers.com/ponderosa.html
Then, "Click here for specs and floorplan". The Ponderosa (same footprint as the Little Joe) has two different toilet/shower options.

the compact. i drew one up from this with a shower pan in the floor at the rear entry door. the floor was lowered at that point. hang a shower curtain and you have a shower room. place a portapotty in the cabinet next to the shower on the right, of the shower

Nice design! One great thing about this plan is that next to the toilet, it has a small closet! I keep seeing commercial designs with absolutely no storage, or at least no easily accessible storage. Two thumbs up for a little closet!

actually i was thinking that the door for the portapotty would funtcion as a shower door in the open position, and privacy for the portapotty.
i like the pop up top, gives you full standing room at the rear, and plenty of room at the dinette. nice big front window,,,id go with one that was hinged at the top for plenty of air. on an 8 foot frame i would simply add a dropped portion to the rear adding the extra two feet and lowering the floor for a showerpan.

I love it actually except for one of my criteria is for it to fit in my garage.

Yes it is interesting that most of this layout I arrived at logically without having seen this website. Here is the layout I generated after doing about 20 variations first:

Hi, I am StandUpGuy here in Charlotte, North Carolina. :)

If you want a trailer that will fit in a standard garage, It will have to be under 7' tall.

The "Little Joe" trailer is 7'4" tall. It will not fit in a standard garage.

If you do not need it to fit in the garage, then, there are a lot of trailers that are "standys".

During my research months ago, I could not find a traverl trailer manufacturor that made a non-expandable trailer that you can stand up in and still have it fit in a standard garage.

So, I decided to design and build one.

Doug Hodder built the Sierra Nomad which is garageable.

I am sure that there are others.
