Postby Duckfenderly1 » Wed Mar 09, 2011 2:58 am

building a tear for a raffle for a great cause!!! Has anyone ever vinly wraped there tear? If so what were the pros and cons if you all dont mind. The raffle is for our local childrens hospital the money wont go to some ceo to buy a boat piss away etc!!!! The way it works they say we need X amount for a ____. Then X amount is paid to who makes it direct for ____ to save lives of kids! My friend said well you just pissed that money away giving away a cool little trailer. Took that friend and put him in his car and told him that some day a child will touch his heart and not to come until then.

Duck, no one I am aware of has done a total vinyl wrap...keep in mind, the tear will havvta be completely finished, as if there was no vinyl involved, as the wrap cannot be considered adequate for sealing/waterproofing and is not to be considered permanent as an aluminum or epoxied finish would be...I had considered this method but with the cost of doing the aluminum sides and then tacking another 300bux or so to do the wrap, it became a non-starter for me..........

An extra step but a cool one if you do it right. You will need to waterproof really well because fixes will require removing the vinyl.

Vinyl wraps can be very expensive. A beautifully finished teardrop is enough of an attractant all by itself. Instead of covering it, why not use banners or other ad media to advertise the offer? These little gems draw a lot of attention anywhere they land. You could use a tag line about that it's for the child in all of us perhaps something like, 'Give Tears of Joy to a Child!' Win this handmade Teardrop trailer, Donate Today!' Or something to this affect.

All the best,

Dave

It can look real good though compared to the cost of a paintjob of the same design. Image

Ann and Chuck's Route 66 teardrop lives about a 1/2 mile from me.

Ann and Chuck are not the original builders. They bought the teardrop from the previous owner.

Madjack,

I found some Marine Digital Camo that I think would look cool to wrap my Ben Roy with, I would need 4 - 4 x 5 ft sheets and the sheets are $75.00 each. I've epoxied with 3 coats of Raka and now ready for the final skin. How hard is this to apply yourself, is it durable. I really like the look but if it is not going to last then I'll go wtih something like a marine topside paint.

Relative to what?

A custom paint job similar to a vinyl wrap can cost 3 to 5 times the amount, or more. And saying your aunt Sally airbrushed a mural for free doesn't count, I have a friend that did a wrap for one of our trailers for free.

I will say though, that a "full" vinyl wrap is not ideal on a teardrop. The vinyl works best if it can be wrapped around the edge or lip of the body panel (doors, hoods, fenders). On a teardrop they are usually terminated at the trim and the edge is exposed to the elements, making it more susceptible to peeling. You can't beat them for promotional graphics though, print and wrap in less than a day.
