Not so tall Cargo Trailers ...

Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Postby GPW » Sun Apr 03, 2011 10:59 am

Jeff , I think all we need is to make a complete list of ALL the things we NEED to bring , their weights , and space requirements ... So many variables as you have so duly noted !!! :o Too many to generalize for everybody ... Good we have so many options ...

I have tandem axles on my TT and don't care for them ... twice as many tires to buy/ maintain :o On a reasonably light 6X12 , single axle should be fine ... I see a Lot of them running around here ...

I'll start on my list ... Maybe some computer literate member could create such a sheet to help evaluate our selections ? ... 8)

Here's a way to make "not tall" work...

WOW!

Man, is that a nice looking outfit! How about some spec's? Sure a lot of cool things you could do with a rig like that. What are your plans? Tucks in really nice behind the tv...

Woy, I really like your trailer .... but why put a pop top ??? Do you really need to stand up inside ... That's the whole point ... If you don''t need to , why bother ... thinking "sleeper"... for the shorter CTs ...

The way it rains around here , I'd be worried about leaks ... Need Solid roof ...

FWIW, Featherlite makes a trailer with that same design:

A little dawn over marble head here Mark. Now I got it...It looks like you are using the CT as a primary sleeper. In that case the pop up Via VW (cool) pop top will really be appreciated. In my case I only sleep in the ct in emergencies. Otherwise we'll use the tent. Seems to be two schools of thought. Some folks want to use a CT like a travel trailer with air etc. Then there's people use the CT as well as ttt's to support camping. a 6x10 or 12 like the wells pop top would be ideal. And not be too tall.

The FeatherLite one use to have a tent option for it, making it an interesting hybrid where the poptop becomes a useful feature.

OK, from one school , basically being a a teardropper at heart , I'm looking for the most room in the smallest space... (gotta' tow it right? ) Spend most of my time outside of the trailer so not looking for a "luxury home "... Place to sleep ,relax ,read a book , change clothes, hang out in the rain, munch on the groceries ... That's about it ...

Some of the bigger CT conversions are really Gorgeous !!! Just a bit much for me ... I'd rather carry my important stuff than some " luxury" items ... ( I leave for You to determine what Luxury items are )
I really love the pop top idea , but around here it rains so Much I'd be worried about leaks ... Folks here long ago abandoned moon roofs, T tops, and top vents , cause' eventually they leak ... :o Just one school ... (school of Damp and Wetness) .... :o

Schaney , that tent on the back sure would come in Handy during mosquito season , which here is most of the year ...

I figure these pop-tops have worked, and still work, on VW campers... if they leak it is a manageable issue. The way it is designed the tent part creates a kind of a second seal... so if water gets past the big thick car door-like weather strip around the edge of the fiberglass top it will not get past the canvas.

I plan on adding rubber hold downs like you see on the hoods of semi tractors. They should keep the weather strip snug...

Sorry I missed the beginning of this topic. I built out my custom-built from Pace 6x10 trailer a year or two ago, it's still a work in progress. Because I couldn't afford to store it elsewhere (monthly storage costs $$$) and had to make it fit into my standard 80" garage door opening, I asked the factory to chop the height down a full foot. I find I don't miss the height -- as others have said here, it's cozy and it works. Take a look at my album for lots of details, but the trailer fits behind my TV (a diesel SUV) perfectly, like it was made for it. hmmm...

So, how tall is it inside?

How tall is your side door?

Kevin, looking at your pictures , I'm really convinced this is the way to go with a camping CT ... It looks so nicely proportioned... Bet it tows nice too huh??? Could you tell us your thoughts about it over the years ... what you consider necessary , what you'd have changed...

Did I post a link to this "popup" CT yet?

http://low-tow.com/howitworks.php

Probably not cheap, with upper cabinets and a side door being a challenge. However, it appears that it can lower itself enough to fit in a residential garage.....
