Have we been infiltrated?

Postby absolutsnwbrdr » Wed Apr 13, 2011 12:08 pm

Just browsing the forum in the past half hour or so, I've noticed numerous posts from supposed new members making obscure posts in different threads, and have car-hire links in their signatures.

Something smells fishy. Or is it spammy?

I could be wrong...

I investigated and found two, one from Pakistan and one from China, I deactivated them...TO ALL MEMBERS, if you see ANY suspicious activity PLEASE contact an admin...the best way to do this is to use the "email Admin" button in the top of page index...this will automatically send an email to several of us...we try very hard to look for these people but they can be very sneaky and everyone's vigilance in needed to help combat these slimeballs....thank you very much.....................

The phpBB software powering this site appears to be 6 years old. The developers have added many tools to the software over the past few years to combat these SEO (search engine optimization) spambots, such as CAPTCHA strings to create new accounts, limiting new members from posting links until they contribute X many posts, and warning triangle buttons on individual posts to report abuse to the moderators. Unless there is a technical reason why the software cannot be upgraded, it seems like the latest version will make the admins' lives easier. Just my $0.02.....

SPAM ... grrrrr!!!! On other forums where I'm a Mod , we had a european robot spammer fill the entire forum , in a matter of 20 minutes ... Every time we tried to delete , it would send even More Spam ... Required some Administrative changes ... and a brief shutdown to take care of ... What a mess !!! New login procedure solved that for the time being ...

Why these people do this is a total mystery to me ... Kyle -"those bastards" ... But on the other hand , I've won the Swiss Lottery 19 times this month ... Ridiculous !!!

we(meaning Mike) have done and instigated many mods to the software that is running here, to change to the newer version would require getting rid of those mods and redoing them...this is a time consuming operation and so we have decided to remain as we are for the time being...afterall, us admins havvta do some something to earn our princely salaries :o :D  ;) ...................

Thanks for the reminder.... I was considering upgrading to 3.x on my own board. I didn't even think about all my mods disappearing. The mods can be a trainwreck to install. If your an amateur like myself it can mean many hours per mod. I don't want to do that again. I just about changed hosts last week due to some billing issues.... I'm glad I didn't pull that trigger lol.

The same thing happened over on another forum we frequent for Jeeps and, BOY, WHAT A MESS! Designer EVERYTHING imaginable posted in every index for the 1st 10-15 subjects. :x

Do people do this for fun or do they really think is good marketing?

I don't know, but I wish there was a way to turn it around on them and make a mess out of their e-mail or forum.
