I'm not a welder but I have access to metal cutting bandsaws, drill presses, etc. and am interested in designing a 5x8 frame with 935lb half axles that can be bolted together and not welded. I'd like it to be light weight for a small car. I've looked at this one: http://www.angib.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/teardrop/tear57.htm in the design library and was wondering if anyone has any strong opinions for/against it? Has anyone made use of perforated square steel tubing?
I'm not against sourcing the material, cutting it, and having someone weld it, but I'd like to consider the option of just bolting it together. I might eventually learn to weld, but for now I'm thinking K.I.S.S. bolt-together.
If anyone wants to suggest ideas, I'm going to model some ideas up and make dimensional drawings. I'd be happy to post and share.
